Keir Starmer’s fantasy economics will only worsen the energy crisis
How we sighed with relief when Jeremy Corbyn lost the 2019 general election and it became clear that he wasn’t going to turn Britain into Venezuela. But now it looks as if we’ll have Keir Starmer do it instead . Or, for that matter, the Conservative government. Whoever wins the Conservative leadership election, and whoever goes on to win the next general election, it seems we are doomed to go down the same path as Venezuela; the only question is how far. I am not surprised that three quarters of Conservative voters told a YouGov poll this morning that they back Starmer’s proposal to freeze the energy price cap at its current level for a further six months, funded, he claims, through a further windfall tax on oil companies, this one backdated to January. Who, save for the wealthy, doesn’t fear their energy bills this winter, and wonder how they are going to keep warm? Once the details sink in, however, I suspect attitudes might change. Starmer’s six month price cap will cost … [Read more...] about Keir Starmer’s fantasy economics will only worsen the energy crisis
Scottish government ‘considering formal plea to British Army’ to help house Ukrainian refugees
SNP ministers are considering issuing a formal plea to the British Army and hiring a second cruise ship to house Ukrainian refugees , after Nicola Sturgeon’s flagship “super sponsor” scheme descended into chaos. The Telegraph understands that Scottish government officials have discussed the highly usual step of making a Military Aid to Civil Authorities (MACA) request to the Ministry of Defence, due to fears thousands of people fleeing the Russian invasion will arrive in Scotland with nowhere to go. Meanwhile, the Scottish government is also believed to be exploring hiring a second cruise ship, which would be based on the Clyde, despite controversy over sending Ukrainians to live on a vessel which has already docked in Edinburgh, which has windowless rooms more cramped than prison cells . While no formal MACA request has yet been made to the military, discussions about the move are believed to have taken place between Scottish and UK Government staff. Almost 30,000 visas … [Read more...] about Scottish government ‘considering formal plea to British Army’ to help house Ukrainian refugees

Ted Baker agrees £211m takeover by Reebok owner Authentic Brands
For free real time breaking news alerts sent straight to your inbox sign up to our breaking news emails Sign up to our free breaking news emails Ted Baker has agreed a £211 million takeover by Authentic Brands Group, the US owner of Reebok and Juicy Couture. Shares in the British fashion brand jumped on Tuesday morning after it confirmed the agreement following months of takeover speculation. Ted Baker’s board told shareholders they have recommended a 110p per share deal. If confirmed, the deal will be worth almost a third less than the 160p per share approach ABG was contemplating in May as potential suitors circled the retail business. Nevertheless, it represents a significant premium to Ted Baker’s current share price, which had slumped since the start of the year. The retailer, which has nearly 400 locations, launched a formal sale process in April after US private equity firm Sycamore made a series of approaches for the brand and … [Read more...] about Ted Baker agrees £211m takeover by Reebok owner Authentic Brands
Watchdog drops case against Barratt Homes in leasehold mis-selling scandal
For free real time breaking news alerts sent straight to your inbox sign up to our breaking news emails Sign up to our free breaking news emails An investigation into alleged mis-selling by housebuilder Barratt Homes has been dropped by the competition watchdog after it found “insufficient” evidence to take legal action. Four of the UK’s biggest housebuilders came under scrutiny from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) more than two years ago as it probed the leasehold housing market. It followed allegations that large developers had broken consumer protection laws by mis-selling leasehold homes and using unfair contract terms which tied some leaseholders to homes they could not sell. In December, housing giant Taylor Wimpey agreed to scrap terms from leasehold contracts which caused ground rents to double in price every decade. And 15 more businesses committing to removing the unfair terms in March, effectively freeing thousands more … [Read more...] about Watchdog drops case against Barratt Homes in leasehold mis-selling scandal
