When Bryce Stewart dived after the toothed, steel-weighted nets of a scallop dredger rumbling over the bottom of the Irish Sea 22 years ago, he witnessed destruction he could never have seen from a boat. "Half crabs. Smashed up sea urchins. Starfish missing some of their arms," said Stewart, a marine ecologist at the University of York. "There was literally a trail of dead and dying things on the seabed." Bottom trawling — a powerful practice in which heavy nets are dragged along the floor of the ocean to catch fish and seafood — is one of the most harmful ways to feed the world. It destroys ecosystems and sweeps up unwanted marine life that gets thrown overboard. From 1950 to 2014, bottom trawlers discarded $560 billion of bycatch, which was more than the value of all catches from longline fishers over the same period. Metal bars and toothed nets wreak havoc on ocean ecosystems Now scientists fear another environmental disaster bubbling under the surface: climate … [Read more...] about How bottom trawling hurts ocean life and speeds up climate change

Vetting of airport staff fast-tracked to ease travel chaos
Security checks on aviation staff will be fast tracked in an attempt to cut delays at Britain's airports. The Department for Transport said it was speeding up the vetting process for new staff to help tackle the travel chaos that has plagued travellers for months. Holidaymakers faced more disruption on Saturday, with thousands of passengers at Heathrow hit by delays caused by a computer failure that left planes unable to refuel and "horrendous" scenes at the baggage reclaim area. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said that by speeding up the vetting of new aviation security staff, the Government was "doing its bit to help deliver for passengers". Counter terrorism checks on staff, which previously took up to 20 days, are now being done in half the time, he said. New staff are also carrying out other training while their security checks are ongoing. Airlines are expected to announce a series of cancellations to summer flights next week aimed at minimising disruption in the … [Read more...] about Vetting of airport staff fast-tracked to ease travel chaos
Canadian Grand Prix 2017: Kimi Raikkonen has a point to prove as ‘little bits and pieces’ help Lewis Hamilton
Little bits and pieces. That was what Lewis Hamilton spoke of ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix on Friday. Little bits and pieces which Mercedes’s engineers have changed on the set-up of his car, and the sister model of team-mate Valtteri Bottas after they were squashed by Ferrari in Monte Carlo. Whatever those little bits and pieces were – and it’s believe that they centred upon minor adjustments such as brake balance and suspension settings in order to get the tyres working in their correct temperature window – they appeared to make a big difference here. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Montreal’s Ile Notre Dame is a different track to Monaco in many ways – it’s much quicker for a start, with top speeds significantly exceeding 300 km/h and has a more slippery surface, but like the Principality it’s also one massive brake test. Its heavy demands on braking see drivers jumping hard on the left pedal for 19 per cent of the lap, and experiencing decelerative forces up to … [Read more...] about Canadian Grand Prix 2017: Kimi Raikkonen has a point to prove as ‘little bits and pieces’ help Lewis Hamilton
Canadian Grand Prix: London Bridge attack victims to be honoured with minute’s silence ahead of the race
A one-minute silence will be staged ahead of Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix in tribute to the victims of the London Bridge terror attack. Eight people were killed and dozens more injured in the atrocity which took place last Saturday night. Canadian Christine Archibald, who hailed from British Colombia, was the first victim to be named after the attack and the promoters of this weekend's Montreal race called on Formula One to hold a minute's silence in her honour. The tribute, which will take place ahead of the seventh round of the championship, comes just a fortnight after a similar one was staged before the Monaco Grand Prix following the Manchester Arena bombing in which 22 people were murdered. Recommended Raikkonen with a point to prove as 'bits and pieces' help Hamilton Ms Archibald, 30, a former homeless shelter worker, was the lone Canadian victim of the terror attack. Sebastian Vettel takes pole 40 years after Gilles Villeneuve triggered Ferrari’s Canadian love affair
Fernando Alonso might think F1 in its current guise is predictable – and it’s hard not to agree at times – but with the top four drivers covered by just 0.232s, and one of them electing to start on the softest tyre compound, Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix holds great promise. Sebastian Vettel ’s pole position was Ferrari ’s first here since Michael Schumacher back in 2001, and gave fans of the legendary team something to cheer on the circuit named in honour of Gilles Villeneuve, one of the Scuderia’s most-loved drivers of all time. Vettel struggled on Friday, damaging his car’s steering when he brushed a wall in first practice, and then failing to find its sweet spot in the second. But he reported a better feel immediately in final practice on Saturday morning, and made the most of that to set the fastest time in the first qualifying session, and then dominate the third with a new unofficial track record of 1m 10.764s. “I was very happy with the last qualifying … [Read more...] about Sebastian Vettel takes pole 40 years after Gilles Villeneuve triggered Ferrari’s Canadian love affair
Canadian Grand Prix LIVE: Sebastian Vettel wins in Montreal to take championship lead off Lewis Hamilton
2018 Canadian Grand Prix: Vettel seizes pole Sebastian Vettel starts the Canadian Grand Prix on pole position as he looks to claw back the 14-point lead that rival Lewis Hamilton holds in the Drivers’ Championship, but an unpredictable race in Montreal could well see a shock or two arrive on Sunday evening. With Hamilton down in fourth, Vettel can make up serious ground in the battle to become a five-time world champion, though just 0.232 seconds covers the top four with Valtteri Bottas in second and the fast Red Bull of Max Verstappen in third. With Daniel Ricciardo , two-time winner this season, down in sixth with Kimi Raikkonen fifth, and the Circuit Gilles Villeneueve one of the easiest tracks to overtake on in the calendar, a thrilling race is on the cards. Hamilton though has pedigree around this track, and should he triumph today he will tie Michael Schumacher with seven Canadian Grand Prix victories. Mexican Grand Prix: Max Verstappen never lost faith in himself amid ‘bulls***’ criticism
Max Verstappen never lost faith in himself amid the “bulls***” criticism that overshadowed his early form during this year’s Formula One championship. The youngster, who only turned 21 at the end of September, was heavily scrutinised for a number of mistakes that cost him a shot at victory at the likes of the Chinese and Monaco Grand Prix early in the year. During this period, Verstappen half-jokingly threatened ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix that he would “headbutt” the next person to ask him about his run of form. F1 US Grand Prix in pictures Show all 17 The Dutchman has since turnaround his fortunes, memorably claiming a shock victory at the Austrian Grand Prix and, more recently, securing second place in Austin last weekend. Addressing the criticism he has faced this season, Verstappen insisted he always “kept believing in myself” in spite of his results. “Most of it was just very unfair, so of course at one point I get … [Read more...] about Mexican Grand Prix: Max Verstappen never lost faith in himself amid ‘bulls***’ criticism

Silverstone horror crash as Formula 2 driver’s life saved by ‘Halo’ device
Two racing drivers have been involved in a horror crash at the British Grand Prix - with experts saying it could have been deadly but for a life-saving "Halo" device. Formula 2 drivers Roy Nissany and Dennis Hauger collided on the opening lap at Silverstone on Sunday, as Hauger's car was launched over the "sausage" kerb and sent airborne towards Nissany. Hauger's vehicle landed on top of his rival at speed, before both cars came to a stop in the gravel. Incredibly, both drivers escaped unhurt and television replays showed it was the Halo - the cockpit-fixed safety device introduced to Formula 1 and Formula 2 in 2018 - that had saved the life of Nissany. Driver survives life-threatening horror crash at Silverstone as one car lands on TOP of another in F2 British Grand Prix
A FORMULA 2 driver has survived a life-threatening crash at Silverstone after a car landed on top of him in a horror collision. Dennis Hauger's car was launched into the air after he connected with a sausage curb on the second lap of this morning's F2 race. He then flew into Roy Nissany, with the Israeli driver miraculously appearing to avoid injury despite the collision. Motorsport fans are thanking the halo for saving Nissany, with the safety device built into the cockpit to protect the head of the driver . Nissany had been competing with Hauger for position before last season's F3 champion slid onto the sausage curb and was launched into the air. Dramatic pictures show Hauger landing on the top of Nissany at high speed, but both drivers thankfully walked away from the crash.
