If any show has mastered the true horror and scope of the battlefield, it’s Game of Thrones. From the chaos of the wildlings attacking Castle Black, to the suffocating terror as Jon Snow’s forces were briefly overwhelmed by Ramsay’s tactics in the Battle of the Bastards. As the series has progressed, the epic scale of its battles has only grown, but the brilliant strategy and gruesome details of fighting are not purely down to the creativity of author George RR Martin and the show’s directors (not to mention HBO's enormous budget) – many aspects have been lifted straight from the history books. Battle of the Bastards One of the most iconic, mesmerising and claustrophobic sequences in television history, the Battle of the Bastards saw Jon Snow come face to face with Ramsay Bolton. Magnificent tracking shots captured the full sweep of the battle, while close ups from Jon Snow's perspective presented us with the terror of being at ground-level. After 67 hours of painstaking drama, tears, unforgiving violence, sex, conspiracies, death, treason, sorcery, White Walkers, dragons, wars and epic-ness, the final season of Game of Thrones is upon us. You've probably forgotten half of what actually went down (except the Red and Purple weddings, obviously), so you're definitely in need of a recap. Here are all the major things that have happened season-by-season so far, and as ever, HUGE spoilers are coming... Season 1 1. Contains spoilers Game of Thrones has produced some properly messed up characters. At first, we didn’t think anyone could get more sadistic than Joffrey... then Ramsay came along with his fondness for castration, flaying men alive and long dog walks. With those two out of the picture, Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbæk) has swaggered into the Iron Throne room ready to take the crown of most barbarous nobleman. As far as malevolent qualifications go, we’ve already seen Euron kill his brother, Balon, and disinherit his niece and nephew, Yara and Theon. Within his marriage proposal to Cersei Lannister in season seven, he even managed to sneak in the suggestion that she murder brother/lover Jaime. And in Stormborn, the following week's episode, he switched into full-on "mad pirate mode", dispatching two of the supposedly deadly Sand Snakes, ransacking Theon and Yara's fleet, and capturing the latter. Nonetheless, it's Euron’s actions in George RR … [Read more...] about Euron Greyjoy: just how depraved could the Game of Thrones character get and how bad is he in the books?
Ahead of the start of Game of Thrones season 8, here's a need-to-know guide on the Mother of Dragons, Daenerys Targaryen. Who is Daenerys Targaryen? Deep breath. Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons – otherwise known as Dany – is one the most significant characters in Game of Thrones. To understand why, we need to take a quick look at Westeros and its history. When the first season of Game of Thrones hit our screens, King Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy) was on Westeros' throne – only becoming ruler following a coup against the previous monarch, King Aerys II of the Targaryen family. Aerys, who was also known as the Mad King (not an auspicious nickname for anyone in power), was deposed and killed because of his violence and cruelty. He had three children: Rheagar, … [Read more...] about Daenerys Targaryen: Everything you need to know about the Game of Thrones Mother of Dragons
