SNP ministers are considering issuing a formal plea to the British Army and hiring a second cruise ship to house Ukrainian refugees , after Nicola Sturgeon’s flagship “super sponsor” scheme descended into chaos. The Telegraph understands that Scottish government officials have discussed the highly usual step of making a Military Aid to Civil Authorities (MACA) request to the Ministry of Defence, due to fears thousands of people fleeing the Russian invasion will arrive in Scotland with nowhere to go. Meanwhile, the Scottish government is also believed to be exploring hiring a second cruise ship, which would be based on the Clyde, despite controversy over sending Ukrainians to live on a vessel which has already docked in Edinburgh, which has windowless rooms more cramped than prison cells . While no formal MACA request has yet been made to the military, discussions about the move are believed to have taken place between Scottish and UK Government staff. ‘Panicking’ mum-of-four who was left stranded on M60 when Green Flag refused to rescue her hit and killed by truck
A "PANICKING" mum who was stranded on the M60 when Green Flag refused to rescue her was hit and killed by a truck just minutes after calling for help. Shirley-Ann Dumbuya, 38, had broken down near junction 20 of the motorway and couldn't move her car from the hatch marked area separating lane one from the slip road. And tragically, the mum from Moston, Greater Manchester , was killed when lorry driver John Bowers failed to notice her stationary Kia Ceed - hitting and killing the mum as she sat inside the car. The judge has now slammed Green Flag for not helping Shirley-Ann, saying: “Green Flag should take it upon themselves to ring 999 to help the person who was obviously panicking, wondering whether to stay or get out of the vehicle, and worrying about the other cars on the motorway. "This was an accident waiting to happen." The thrill of buying a new item of clothing fades after just four wears, study finds
The excitement of buying new clothing starts to fade after just four wears – and even turns to guilt for over half of shoppers, according to a study. A poll of 2,000 adults found nearly half (47%) claim they enjoy shopping for new clothing, with the average Brit spending £70 a month updating their wardrobe – although a fifth will spend £100 or more. But the post-shopping glow doesn't last long, with 22% admitting the excitement of the item's “newness” is fleeting. And 17% soon start to develop doubts about whether or not they actually like their new purchase – until the shopping high turns to guilt for 56% of consumers. Brits typically shop for new clothes five times a month – but as the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite, three-quarters are now seeking bigger savings when they do so. And garments needn’t be brand new for cash-strapped Brits to get their retail therapy glow – as more than half believe it just needs to be new to them. Cognitive psychologist, Dr … [Read more...] about The thrill of buying a new item of clothing fades after just four wears, study finds
Major A-road closed by mudslide during torrential downpours
Drivers have been blocked from using a major UK road due to safety fears over a mudslide. Torrential downpours sparked the dire situation on the A358, following a heatwave at the weekend. The route was closed at Combe Florey, near Bishop’s Lydeard, on Monday evening. Twelve hours later, it remains shut as it wasn’t considered safe enough to send clean-up crews in until this morning. It comes after a yellow weather warning in place across southern England was upgraded to amber over Somerset on Monday. Households have been urged to pack ‘grab bags’ of valuables and essentials as three million homes face the risk of flooding in the coming days. There are hopes the A358 could be reopened in the next few hours. A spokesman for Somerset County Council said: ‘Crews were on site after a mudslide on the A358 near Combe Florey last night. ‘Following an inspection, a decision was taken to close the road overnight as it was not safe to attempt a clear-up operation until … [Read more...] about Major A-road closed by mudslide during torrential downpours
