Plan to reduce sewage in rivers is shelved by the Government
Official plans to reduce the amount of raw sewage that is dumped in rivers and lakes across the country have been delayed by the Government, it has emerged. Ministers were due to publish a strategy outlining how they would tackle what they call the “unacceptable” levels of sewage discharge by next month. But the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has quietly shelved this until a future date, saying the plan will now be published “in due course”. An investigation by The Telegraph earlier this year found that water companies are releasing raw sewage into rivers more than 1,000 times a day despite being told to do so only when there is heavy rainfall. Raw sewage was discharged into rivers and coastal areas for more than 3.1 million hours on more than 400,000 occasions throughout 2020, according to data from the Environment Agency. Jim McMahon, the shadow environment secretary, accused water companies of “ routinely dumping raw sewage in our rivers , … [Read more...] about Plan to reduce sewage in rivers is shelved by the Government
Scott Rabalais: The picture is incomplete, but Jayden Daniels is leader in LSU’s QB race
The leaden skies over LSU’s football practice fields occasionally made good on their threat to dump rain on the Tigers’ Thursday morning workouts. But even rain couldn’t dampen the intense curiosity about the proceedings. This was, to my ever more crowded recollection, the first time the media was allowed to watch a non-Spring Game practice at LSU since at least Gerry DiNardo was coach in the 1990s. There was much to see. Who won the grappling matches between the offensive and defensive lines? How were the running backs at hitting holes and catching passes out of the backfield? Is the tight end position, one new coach Brian Kelly likes to count on heavily, going to be an asset or a liability? How were the defensive backs and linebackers? And what about that drill that had the punt returners shagging balls with another football already in hand? Eventually though, whether you wanted them to or not, your eyeballs were dragged magnetically back to the … [Read more...] about Scott Rabalais: The picture is incomplete, but Jayden Daniels is leader in LSU’s QB race
How life has changed for Delhi rape victim’s family

The BBC's Soutik Biswas met the family of the victim to find out how life had changed for them after her death. Her father had returned home tetchy and tired after a gruelling 16-hour working day at Delhi's international airport on the night of 16 December 2012. He received a call from a breathless policeman an hour before midnight that his daughter had met with an accident and had been taken to hospital. An hour later, doctors told him she had been gang raped on a moving bus by a group of men. Two weeks later, she died in a hospital in Singapore . I started selling pick ‘n’ mix sweets from my spare room 4 years ago – now my business is worth £1MILLION
AN entrepreneur who started selling sweets from her spare room has turned the enterprise into a £1m global confectionary business. Laura Scott, 25, from Plymouth , Devon, started the Conscious Candy Company, which sells vegan pick n' mix style sweets, in 2018. She spotted a gap in the market for vegan sweets and began selling selection bags of bulk-bought treats, often on her lunch break from her job in graphic design. In 2019 she was able to officially launch her business, selling out on her first day of trading. This convinced her that she could go full time with her passion project. During the lockdown, business boomed and Laura was shipping her sugary goods all over the world, including fan favourites like cola bottles and fizzy strawberries. She has customers as far afield as the US and Japan. Domestically, Conscious Candy also provides a waffle delivery service in Plymouth on UberEats. Man with tropical jungle in garden stores GALLONS of rainwater in face of drought
A green-fingered man has stored thousands of litres of rainwater , to protect his 25-year-old exotic garden from the looming drought. Mike Clifford, 61, has spent decades turning the plot behind his suburban bungalow into a tropical jungle full of rare plants. Despite being only 65ft long and 35ft wide, the garden is packed with extraordinary species native to South and Central America, Africa, and China. Many of his plants have bloomed months earlier than expected due to the record-breaking heat. But others, which are used to warm and moist climates, are at risk of dying due to the shortage of rain. Parts of the UK have been hit by water shortages ahead of a Met Office amber warning for extreme heat coming into force this week, while Thames Water on Tuesday announced it would bring in a temporary hosepipe ban. Mike Clifford's jungle garden ( Image: Max Willcock/BNPS) The ban was likely to affect parts of London, Surrey, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, … [Read more...] about Man with tropical jungle in garden stores GALLONS of rainwater in face of drought
Scorched ‘out of control’ Chinese rocket debris found on LAND – and it could happen again
MASSIVE chunks of charred metal thought to be from a crashed rocket belonging to China have been found on land mere metres from people's homes. The out-of-control Chinese booster rocket came hurtling back to Earth on Saturday, and now suspected pieces are turning up across Southeast Asia. People have found unconfirmed debris in Kalimantan, Indonesia and Sawarak, Malaysia . Miraculously, there have been no reports of casualties or property damage. But experts say it came so close to villages, that had it fallen a few hundred metres either way it "could have been a different story". Unverified images suspected to be that of the rocket have started appearing on local media and social networks.
