The Latest on Wednesday from the Australian Open (all times local): 12:40 a.m. Maria Sharapova set up a third-round showdown with defending champion Caroline Wozniacki at the Australian Open after a 6-2, 6-1 win over Rebecca Peterson of Sweden. Sharapova won the Australian title in 2008 and has reached the final at Melbourne Park three other times, and can raise her game well above the status of a No. 30 seed. The Russian has dropped only three games in her first two matches and is hitting form quickly despite sitting out the end of the 2018 season after a fourth-round exit at the U.S. Open to give her right shoulder a rest. The third-seeded Wozniacki also beat a Swedish opponent in the second round, advancing 6-1, 6-3 over Johanna Larsson. Wozniacki's match was considerably earlier in the day, while Sharapova's win wrapped up Day 3 after midnight. "I don't know about you guys, but this is way past my bed time," she told the crowd at Margaret Court Arena. The Latest on Monday at the Australian Open: (all times local): 12:45 a.m. Bernard Tomic has continued his criticism of Australia's Davis Cup captain, saying LLeyton Hewitt is causing division among the players and should be replaced. Tomic, who was beaten 6-2 6-4, 7-6 (3) by sixth-seeded Marin Cilic, said he would not play Davis Cup again with Hewitt as captain. "No one likes him anymore," Tomic said of Hewitt. "We have a lot of issues that not a lot of players are happy about ... he's doing the wrong thing and everyone's leaving." Serena Williams is back in Melbourne as hot favourite to repeat her 2017 Australian Open win and claim a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam with rivals, including defending champion Caroline Wozniacki, battling health issues and poor form. Williams won her 23rd title and seventh at Melbourne Park while eight weeks pregnant two years ago, and now attempts to match Margaret Court's mark of 24 singles majors on the Australian's home soil. The 37-year-old enters the tournament ranked 16 in the world but has proved in the past that such numbers mean little to her, despite fresh memories of her meltdown in losing the US Open final to Naomi Osaka in September. Her 2017 triumph Down Under gave Williams the outright open era record for singles majors ahead of Steffi Graf's 22, leaving only Court's tally of 24 titles -- 13 of which were earned in the amateur era before 1968 -- for Williams to chase. Williams missed her first chance to match Court when losing last year's Wimbledon final to … [Read more...] about Australian Open: History beckons as Serena shoots for Slam history
