Land Rover has unveiled its revamped Defender, an updated version of one of the most famous vehicles ever made. The carmaker said the new Defender, launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show on Wednesday, was “an icon reimagined for the 21st century”. The new 4x4 will be built for Jaguar Land Rover in Slovakia and prices will start from about £45,000. Production of the last British-made Defenders ceased in 2016, almost 70 years after the first model came off the Solihull production line following the second world war. The original version was a staple for the royal family, a favourite of the Queen, and a regular fixture in James Bond movies. Used by farmers and the British army, it was modelled on wartime jeeps. JLR said the shape of the new vehicle would make it “instantly recognisable”, but said it had been updated to “raise the threshold for both off-road ruggedness and on-road comfort”. The manufacturer said it would remain the “ultimate 4x4 … [Read more...] about Land Rover stresses off-road credentials of all-new Defender

The original Defender went out of production in 2016, with a dedicated off-roader-sized gap in the British firm’s line-up since then. This new version tackles that and is instantly recognisable as a Defender thanks to its boxy silhouette. Its design takes on a modern look though with enclosed LED headlights, softer details and a distinctive rear light design. It looks set to be just as capable as its iconic forefather, if not more thanks to some clever new tech. Underpinning the off-roader is a new ‘D7x’ platform, based on an aluminium monocoque, which Land Rover says is three times stiffer than traditional body-on-frame chassis setups. Debuting on the new Defender is ‘Configurable Terrain Response’, which allows … [Read more...] about Iconic Land Rover Defender returns
The clock is ticking down to its debut, though all Jaguar Land Rover have said is that it will be unveiled sometime this year before going on sale in 2020. The general expectation is that the new Defender will have its global unveiling at the IAA Frankfurt motor show in September. The show gets under way on Thursday September 12 and if Land Rover is to take the covers off what is arguably the car maker’s most eagerly awaited vehicle yet then it will be that day. In its preview of the Frankfurt show the magazine Autocar suggests that of all the debuts there, the Defender is the one everyone is waiting for. Land Rover’s May sales figures have revealed a further slide as the Coventry car maker continues to navigate a course through choppy waters. The company has announced it sold 42,370 vehicles in May, down by 12.2% compared to May 2018. The latest figures follow a difficult 2018/2019 financial year when the car maker posted a £358million loss - or £3.6 billion if a writedown on the value of assets was taken into account. However, the company reported an encouraging period towards the end of the financial year as it returned to profitability for the final quarter. Brexit uncertainty and declining demand for diesel vehicles means life continues to be tough for Jaguar Land Rover but its biggest challenge continues to be the sales slide in China, which at one point had become its biggest market. The company is in the midst of a new product offensive and has been buoyed by demand for both the all-new Ranger Rover Evoque and its first all-electric car the Jaguar I-Pace. A NEW version of the Discovery Sport has been launched by Land Rover and, although it looks very familiar, it comes bristling with technology. The latest generation of what has become Land Rover’s top selling model – almost 100,000 have been sold in the UK in the past three years – was unveiled at the company’s London Experience Centre at the Luton Hoo estate in Bedfordshire. Priced from £31,575 – only a few hundred pounds more than before – the seven trim range will top out from £48,575 for a high-specification, seven-seat R-Dynamic HSE model complete with automatic transmission and Land Rover’s new 48-volt mild hybrid engine. All petrol models – and there are two variants of Land Rover’s 2.0-litre Ingenium engine available – come with the new powertrain, which helps with performance and keeps emissions low. Land Rover says the mild-hybrid system improves fuel economy by up to seven per cent and helps cut … [Read more...] about New Land Rover Discovery Sport is a techno treat
