Eight of the greatest baseball movies of all time (and where you can watch them)
SUPPLIED From Kevin Costner fooling around with Susan Sarandon and James Earl Jones to a star-studded look at Chicago's infamous Black Sox, these offer great entertainment. While basketball and “football” have their own claims, baseball has been generally acknowledged as the United States’ national sport. First played there about 160 years ago, the fiercely fought contest of bat and ball has not only become big business, but has also been a font of regular inspiration for Hollywood. As a new eight-part take on the story surrounding the 1940s and 50s All-American Girls Professional Baseball League comes to Prime Video (A League of Their Own), Stuff to Watch has taken a look back at the history of “the ballgame” on screen and come up with this list of eight great features we know have stood the test of time. “Culmination of truly a lifelong dream “: Vermont poised to send woman to Congress for first time
Becca Balint on Tuesday won the Democratic primary for Vermont's sole congressional seat , meaning the state could for the first time elect a woman to represent them in Congress. Two years ago, Vermont became the only state in the nation that has yet to send a woman to represent them in Congress. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi was elected in 2020, after she had been appointed two years earlier to finish Sen. Thad Cochran. "This is sort of a culmination of truly a lifelong dream of being able to be in public servants as an openly gay woman," Balint told CBS News. If elected, Balint will not only make history by being the first female figure sent by Vermont to Congress but she would also be the first openly gay member to represent the state. Although Republicans had two women running, meaning if one of them won, it would be guarantted the state would send a woman to Congress for the first time, Liam Madden won the Republican primary on Tuesday. Madden won the GOP … [Read more...] about “Culmination of truly a lifelong dream “: Vermont poised to send woman to Congress for first time
Forget Grease, if you want to remember Olivia Newton-John at her best, watch Xanadu
LIFE Forget watching Grease, Xanadu was the perfect Olivia Newton John movie. OPINION: This week, you’re going to see a lot of pictures of Olivia Newton-John as Sandy from Grease as you scroll through your socials. Newton-John, 73, died on Tuesday after a decades long battle with breast cancer , and that role is probably her most famous – and if you loved that film, fair play, there are some bangers on that soundtrack. But if you really want to remember Newton-John at her most glorious, her most radiant, then forget that 50s pastiche with its grubby innuendo and awkward sexual politics – watch Xanadu instead. Now, there’s a chance you might never even have heard of this film. It’s been all but forgotten since it came out in 1980 – mostly because in no world could it be considered a good film. But don’t let that put you off. READ MORE: Ponies, Barbie and Grease: All the things I prayed for in the 80s Surprise! Mystery of ‘alien life on Venus’ may finally be solved thanks to shock new study
ALIEN lifeforms may not be responsible for Venus' strange atmospheric composition, according to new research. A study published in December 2021 proposed that extraterrestrial life may exist on Venus. Researchers from Cardiff University, MIT, and Cambridge University cited Venusian clouds with ammonia as the reasoning behind this theory. They added that while Venus itself is too hot to host life forms, the clouds could theoretically be home to alien microbial bacteria. However, now a new study conducted by scientists at Cambridge University found that this may not be the case. The research, published in the journal Nature Communications, claims that abundant life forms typically leave behind chemical fingerprints. Why I will never give up The Good Fight to get the best TV shows to air in NZ
James Croot is the editor of Stuff to Watch . Listen to the Stuff To Watch podcast by hitting the Play button below, or find it on podcast apps such as Apple or Spotify . OPINION: Peaky Blinders fans, I feel your pain. Derry Girls lovers, I too am frustrated by a seemingly interminable wait. Both are shows with an army Kiwi admirers desperately waiting for news of when the final episodes of their beloved shows will finally be available on our shores. They were unleashed overseas months ago. While we know that the Irish period comedy is slated to turn up here, like many other territories outside of Great Britain and the Emerald Isle, on Netflix “later this year”, the situation around Peaky is murkier. The concluding sixth season had a blink-and-you’ve-missed-it run on Sky TV’s BBC UKTV channel and Sky Go back in March and April, but failed to show up on Netflix (where the other five seasons are homed) here as expected on June 10. So while countries … [Read more...] about Why I will never give up The Good Fight to get the best TV shows to air in NZ
Famed Producer Scott Rudin Accused Of Bullying, Abuse: ‘Every Day Was Exhausting And Horrific’ | The Daily Wire
Academy Award-winning producer Scott Rudin (“The Social Network,” “No Country for Old Men”) has a reputation for allegedly abusing people in the workplace. In a lengthy expose in The Hollywood Reporter (THR), several of Rudin’s former staffers alleged that the producer, who already had a reputation for being hot-tempered, would regularly engage in verbally and physically abusive behavior in the office. One particularly nasty incident involved him allegedly smashing an Apple computer over an assistant’s hand, sending him to the emergency room. “At about 4:15 p.m. — more than 10 hours into a typical Rudin day that began at 6 and never wrapped before 8 — the Oscar-winning producer was enraged that one of his assistants failed to get him a seat on a sold-out flight,” reported THR. “In a fit of fury, he allegedly smashed an Apple computer monitor on the assistant’s hand. The screen shattered, leaving the young man bleeding and in need of immediate medical attention. Is India really the most dangerous country for women?
Published 28 June 2018 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A survey conducted by the Thomson Reuters Foundation has ranked India as the world's most dangerous country for women, ahead of Afghanistan, Syria and Saudi Arabia. But is this really true? The poll surveyed 548 experts on six different indices - healthcare, discrimination, cultural traditions, sexual and non-sexual violence, and human trafficking . They were first asked to name the five most dangerous countries from the list of 193 United Nations member states. And then they were asked to name the worst country in each of the above categories. India topped three - cultural traditions, sexual violence and human trafficking. A similar poll seven years ago had ranked India fourth, with Afghanistan top of the list. The new survey has been criticised in India, with many questioning how countries like Saudi Arabia and … [Read more...] about Is India really the most dangerous country for women?
A League of Their Own: Prime Video’s slick, smart update not quite a home run
Listen to the Stuff To Watch podcast by hitting the Play button below, or find it on podcast apps such as Apple or Spotify . REVIEW: Eager to cash in on the outstanding critical and commercial success of 1992 sports comedy A League of Their Own, a TV series spin-off was quickly put into production. However, this second bite at this storytelling peach of a tale set around the mid-20th Century All-American Girls Professional Baseball League failed to recapture the lightning in a bottle that was director Penny Marshall’s movie. Lacking the former Laverne & Shirley star’s understanding of comedy, a female ensemble full of strong personalities (everyone from Geena Davis to Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell and Lori Petty) and a solid group of men to spur with and rail against (Tom Hanks, Jon Lovitz and David Strathairn for a start), the series quickly foundered, airing only three of its six episodes.
