The most famous story about modern presidential campaigning now has a quaint old-world tone. It’s about the showdown between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy in the first debate of their 1960 campaign, which was also the very first nationally televised general-election debate in the United States. The story is that Kennedy looked great, which is true, and Nixon looked terrible, which is also true—and that this visual difference had an unexpected electoral effect. As Theodore H. White described it in his hugely influential book The Making of the President 1960 , which has set the model for campaign coverage ever since, “sample surveys” after the debate found that people who had only heard Kennedy and Nixon talking, over the radio, thought that the debate had been a tie. But those who saw the two men on television were much more likely to think that Kennedy—handsome, tanned, non-sweaty, poised—had won. Historians who have followed up on this story haven’t found data to back … [Read more...] about When Donald Meets Hillary: Who Will Win the Debates?

Boris Johnson leadership LIVE: Cabinet members queue up to tell PM he must quit
A delegation of Cabinet ministers are set to meet Boris Johnson at No10 as he heads out of a car crash Liaison Committee meeting this evening to tell him to go. 'Men in grey suits' Welsh Secretary Simon Hart, grim-faced Transport Secretary Grant Shapps and Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis are set to tell the Prime Minister he had lost the confidence of his party. The revelation the PM knew about claims against “grope” accused MP Chris Pincher, then promoted him, then “forgot” he’d been told, was the last straw for many MPs. Chancellor Rishi Sunak and health secretary Sajid Javid led the way yesterday for a wave of Tory resignations . The doomed PM has seen dozens of his own MPs quit in 24 hours, including ministers, parliamentary private secretaries and trade envoys. Meanwhile, Tories have discussed changing the rules of no confidence votes - to force the PM out as soon as next week if he opts to squat in No10. In a day of feverish drama at Westminster the … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson leadership LIVE: Cabinet members queue up to tell PM he must quit

PETERSON: Russia Vs. Ukraine Or Civil War In The West? | The Daily Wire
We are now several months into the conflict with Russia. I say “we” because we are all pretending here in the West that the real war is between Russia and Ukraine but (nod nod wink wink) if we clandestinely, in some sense, provide full support to Ukraine then maybe the Russians, foolish and backward as they are won’t notice and we can simultaneously pretend that we aren’t flirting with the prospect of a long, arduous and inconceivably destructive war. I want to say at the outside that I think what Putin has done is unconscionable; God only knows what the impact will be, as all four of the horsemen of the apocalypse are on the march again. I think that the collusion of the leadership of the Russian Orthodox Church is even more unforgivable. Be that as it may, I also believe that the attempt to deeply understand the motive forces for this war, as it is very difficult to set things right (let alone avoid a similar future catastrophe—or even to stop this conflict from spreading) in the … [Read more...] about PETERSON: Russia Vs. School meals: The mum trying to feed her children through half-term week
By Lauren Turner Published 26 October 2020 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing It's the start of half-term week, and Lucy is making pancakes for her two children for breakfast. But these are made with water, as she doesn't have any milk left. The eggs are from the chickens in her garden. And she is wondering what else she will feed her children until they go back to school. Lucy Houghton, 36, usually relies on the free school meals her children are entitled to and had vouchers over summer to spend in a supermarket for their food. But now it's half-term, and MPs have voted against the vouchers being continued through the half-term and Christmas holidays. "I know it's only a few pounds to some people - it's an expensive coffee and a muffin in London - but it can make the difference between my children eating or not," she says. "It's going to be tough this week." She's … [Read more...] about School meals: The mum trying to feed her children through half-term week
Slow motion collapse of Boris’s government continues as more ministers quit
Boris Johnson ’s government has continued to slowly fall apart as a growing number of ministers head for the door. A wave of resignations was triggered when health secretary Sajid Javid left the Cabinet last night over the handling of the Chris Pincher groping scandal. Minutes later, chancellor Rishi Sunak walked, two moves which threatened to bring down the government entirely. Outrage is growing over Johnson’s admission that he knew about a sexual assault allegation when he promoted him to deputy chief whip. No 10 changed its line a few times – initially saying the PM wasn’t aware of the claims, then saying they were either ‘resolved’ or ‘did not progress to a formal complaint’. But then, a former top Foreign Office diplomat Simon McDonald revealed that complaints made about Pincher’s behaviour in 2019 were indeed made at an official level. Since then, there has been a steady drip of resignations from government, including from solicitor general Alex Chalk and … [Read more...] about Slow motion collapse of Boris’s government continues as more ministers quit
Love rat Stephen Bear bedded stranger in my hotel room after I was bitten by a monkey, blasts ex Georgia Harrison
Georgia Harrison has hit back after Stephen Bear branded her a "rump and dump" in a humiliating showdown - and revealed he cheated on her in front of her face. The former Love Island star was out in Thailand with Bear, her ex co-star Theo Campbell, and Bear's friend when the Celebrity Big Brother winner snogged a random woman at the bar they were partying in. To add insult to injury, Georgia was forced to sleep outside in a sunbed because Bear took his conquest up to the hotel room they were sharing and shut the door in Georgia's face. If that wasn't bad enough, Georgia had already been hospitalised that day after being bitten by a monkey, so needed access to her preventative anti-rabies medication - although a source close to Bear said he wasn't aware she had left her meds in the room. Georgia, 24, told Mirror Online "this is the most hurtful thing Bear has ever done" after getting back with him temporarily while they were in Thailand together. Georgia and Bear were … [Read more...] about Love rat Stephen Bear bedded stranger in my hotel room after I was bitten by a monkey, blasts ex Georgia Harrison

Simon Hart made it clear to No 10 on Tuesday it was "game over", adding that the prime minister's departure should not require ministerial resignations. Ofsted steps into debate over parents’ right to choose education
Branwen Jeffreys Published 11 December 2015 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The chief inspector of schools has never been afraid of controversy, and with this latest intervention against unregistered schools he is firmly stepping into the debate about how and where people can choose to educate their children. It is perfectly legal to choose to educate your children at home, and if you do make that choice there is no obligation to follow a particular curriculum. It is also perfectly legal to run a part-time tuition centre to offer additional teaching and support to children who are home-educated. And if your part-time education centre teaches children for fewer than 20 hours a week there are remarkably few obligations. You don't have to register with the authorities or be open to inspection, unlike a private fee-paying school. This has created a grey … [Read more...] about Ofsted steps into debate over parents’ right to choose education
