A 56-year-old man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court for attempting to disrupt the British grand prix at Silverstone yesterday. Neil Horan, of south-east London, is facing one count of aggravated trespass following the incident at the Northamptonshire circuit yesterday. No plea was entered and magistrates in Northampton adjourned the case for seven days. Horan, originally from County Kerry in the Irish Republic, spoke only to confirm his full name, Cornelius Horan, age and address during the brief hearing. Chairman of the bench Richard Nelson told Horan his next appearance before the court would be via video-link from prison. Applying unsuccessfully for bail, Horan's solicitor Paul Carter said he was on sabbatical and a man of "strong and moral views on religion". Black-haired Horan appeared in the dock wearing a grey tank top, white shirt and grey trousers and was flanked by two security guards. He sat impassively throughout the 10-minute hearing … [Read more...] about Man charged over track protest

What did police know as the Texas school shooting unfolded?
As investigators dig deeper into the law enforcement response to the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas , a host of disturbing questions remain about what officers on the scene knew as the deadly attack was unfolding. Did they know children were trapped in a classroom with the gunman? Was that potentially critical information relayed to the incident commander on the scene? And did officers challenge the commander's decision not to promptly storm the classroom? Authorities have not released audio of the 911 calls or radio communications but have confirmed dispatchers received panicked 911 calls from students trapped inside the locked classroom with the gunman while officers waited in a hallway outside. In an apparent breakdown in communications, Texas state Sen. Roland Gutierrez said Thursday that the commander overseeing police at the crime scene, school district Police Chief Pete Arredondo, was never informed that children were calling 911 from inside the school. … [Read more...] about What did police know as the Texas school shooting unfolded?
Watch moment world’s second deadliest snake lunges at man in a crawl space
A snake catcher has recounted the moment he captured one of the world's deadliest serpents—while stuck in a crawl space. Professional Ryan Fuller managed to catch the chilling lunges of the Eastern Brown snake on camera, as he sought to remove it from beneath a house in Queensland, Australia. He ended up on his hands and knees in the cramped space, as the "dramatic" snake defended itself, repeatedly striking. The venom of the Eastern Brown is deadly, with Australian Geographic naming it as the country's most dangerous snake. They're responsible for more deaths Down Under than any other snakes, with the site claiming they're famous for being "[f]ast-moving, aggressive and known for their bad temper." Their venom is ranked as the second most toxic among snakes in the world, as the site noted: "Its venom causes progressive paralysis and stops the blood from clotting, which may take many doses of antivenom to reverse. Victims may collapse within a few minutes." Incredibly, … [Read more...] about Watch moment world’s second deadliest snake lunges at man in a crawl space
The Lawless Frontier
This past April in Quetta, the bleached-gray, drought-stricken capital of the Pakistani border province of Baluchistan, I awoke to explosions and gunfire. In search of the violence, my translator, Jamil, and I jumped into a four-wheel-drive Toyota and raced through the section of town inhabited by Pashtoon tribesmen. Suddenly we were surrounded by Pakistani soldiers, who forced us out of the car and pointed assault rifles in our faces. While they searched us, I saw two other soldiers with automatic weapons run along a high wall a few feet from where we stood. Shots rang out from inside the adjacent compound. By 11:00 a.m. five people had been killed and twenty wounded, and a large cache of weapons had been confiscated in a raid on the Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami (Pashtoon National People's Party), a group supporting an independent "Pashtoonistan" created out of Pakistani territory. The party stood accused of murders and kidnapping. Security forces claimed victory, but reports later … [Read more...] about The Lawless Frontier
Riot at funeral of police victim
Four mourners and 23 police officers were injured this weekend when violence erupted at the funeral of the fourth unarmed black man to be shot dead by New York police in 13 months. The row over the death has now emerged as a major campaign issue in the senatorial race between the New York mayor, Rudolph Giuliani, and the First Lady, Hillary Clinton. Patrick Dorismond, 25, a security guard who was the son of a Haitian immigrant, was killed on March 16 in a struggle with undercover drug squad officers engaged in a "buy and bust" operation outside a bar in Manhattan. The funeral procession had started peacefully in the streets of Brooklyn on Saturday, with thousands following the coffin and lining the streets. But trouble began as the cortege arrived at a Roman Catholic church. Some of the 5,000-strong crowd surged towards the church as the pallbearers removed the coffin, draped with US and Haitian flags, from the hearse. Several snatched the US flag and burned it. … [Read more...] about Riot at funeral of police victim

The Sugababes have reflected on their incredible Glastonbury performance, calling their packed-out gig ‘such a celebration’ of their reunion , after the show drew in such a big crowd that the Worthy Farm field was shut down. The Avalon stage at the Somerset festival had to be closed off after thousands more fans than expected arrived to watch Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena, and Siobhan Donaghy perform hits including Overload and Push The Button. The trio’s Glastonbury gig came ahead of their upcoming UK tour after more than 20 years. Appearing on BBC Breakfast alongside her bandmates, Keisha said of their Glastonbury show: ‘They had to close the stage off, the whole area – they had to close the field. ‘And it was crazy because we were told before we went on, “There are a few more people than expected,” because we expected like 3,000. ‘And then it was like, “OK so security had been called.”‘ Siobhan said they had been told that if one of the security … [Read more...] about Sugababes recall Glastonbury gig as ‘such a celebration’ of their reunion after shutting down field with huge crowd

Russian soldier sentenced to life in prison over Ukraine war crime
A tank commander has become the first Russian soldier to be convicted of a war crime by a Ukrainian court since Moscow's invasion of the country began on February 24. Sergeant Vadim Shishimarin, a 21-year-old tank commander from the Siberian region of Irkutsk, was sentenced to life in prison by a Kyiv court on Monday. Shishimarin last week pleaded guilty to killing an unarmed 62-year-old man in the northeastern Ukrainian village of Chupakhivka on February 28. Shishimarin said he had been ordered to shoot at the man from a car in which he was traveling. Shishimarin had apparently confessed to the killing in a video released earlier this month by the Security Service of Ukraine, also known as the SBU. "I was ordered to shoot," Shishimarin said in the video. "I shot one [round] at him. He falls. And we kept on going." Last week, the defendant said he was "nervous" at the time of the shooting and "didn't want to kill" victim Oleksandr Shelipov when he was ordered to do so.
