More info Various estimates of when people first arrived in the Americas have been published in recent years, varying from 20,000 to more than 30,000 years ago. In the second half of the 20th century, many North American archaeologists agreed on the idea that the Clovis people had been the first to reach the Americas. Their ancestors were thought to have crossed a land bridge linking Siberia to Alaska during the last ice age, but this land bridge — known as Beringia — later disappeared underwater as the ice slowly melted. Modi accused of remaking India in his image after renaming world’s largest stadium after himself
The renaming of the world's largest cricket stadium after India's prime minister, has renewed accusations of narcissism and a growing personality cult around the nationalist leader, in the latest row over politically-driven name changes in the country. The announcement that the 132,000-seat venue formerly known as Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad would be become the Narendra Modi Stadium sparked delight in his supporters and scorn from political opponents. Mr Modi's gift for oratory and keen populist instincts have made him by far the most popular politician in India, and in 2019 won his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) a second term. Yet he has also attracted accusations of vanity and attempting to glorify himself as the founder of a new Hindu India. Critics last week asked whether the stadium's new name was an attempt to bolster his legacy with a relabelling spree. Dedicating sports stadiums to former prime ministers is common in India, but renaming such a high-profile venue for … [Read more...] about Modi accused of remaking India in his image after renaming world’s largest stadium after himself
Narendra Modi pays price at the polls as India suffers another day of record deaths
Narendra Modi, the Indian prime minister, suffered a major blow on Sunday after his right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lost a key regional election amid mounting criticism of his response to the country's catastrophic outbrea k of the coronavirus. As the votes were counted for the state elections in West Bengal, a new daily record of 3,689 deaths from Covid was recorded on the day, along with 390,000 new infections. Britain announced on Sunday night that it was sending 1,000 ventilators to India. It comes on top of 200 ventilators, 495 oxygen concentrators and 3 oxygen generation units dispatched last week to Indian hospitals. Professor Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer, and Sir Patrick Vallance, the Chief Scientific Adviser, have also spoken to their Indian counterparts to provide advice and insight. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “The terrible images we have seen in India in recent weeks are all the more powerful because of the close and enduring … [Read more...] about Narendra Modi pays price at the polls as India suffers another day of record deaths
Boris Johnson opens door to increased immigration from India in exchange for trade deal
Boris Johnson on Wednesday opened the door to increased immigration from India to the UK in exchange for a trade deal, as he prepared to meet Narendra Modi , the country's prime minister. Speaking from his plane, the Prime Minister said he hoped to strike a trade deal "by the end of the year" and that he had "always been in favour of having people come to this country". He suggested more relaxed rules for Indian immigrants could be offered by the Government in exchange for a speedy deal that allows the two countries to trade without tariffs. "We have a massive shortage in the UK, not least in experts in IT and programmers," Mr Johnson said. "We're short to the tune of hundreds of thousands in our economy. "We need to have a professional approach but it has to be controlled." His comments come after ministers announced they would loosen visa restrictions for Indian students earlier this year. Easier immigration is a key demand of Mr Modi in trade negotiations, and could … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson opens door to increased immigration from India in exchange for trade deal
BepiColombo: British spacecraft to blast off to Mercury and attempt to solve solar system’s mysteries
A British-built spacecraft is about to blast off to Mercury . The BepiColombo ship will fly five billion miles to the planet that is closest to our sun. The scientists behind it hope that it can help solve some of the mysteries that hang over the distant world. It might, for instance, contain water ice, hidden in shadows on its otherwise blazing hot surface, scientists speculate – a discovery that could help shed light on the possibility of alien life in our own solar system. It will also look to explain why the planet has such as huge iron core at its centre, and unlock the history of the vast volcanic vents that shook its surface for billions of years. Nasa's most stunning pictures of space Show all 30 BepiColombo is due to blast off from the European spaceport at Kourou, French Guiana, at 2.45am UK time on Saturday October 20. The four-tonne craft will be carried into space by a heavy lift Ariane 5, the European Space … [Read more...] about BepiColombo: British spacecraft to blast off to Mercury and attempt to solve solar system’s mysteries

Ukraine’s EU application is splitting Europe in two
Ukraine's bid to join the European Union has left the bloc struggling to square its support for Ukraine with the concerns of western member states, many of which are skeptical of enlargement and wary of setting a precedent of "fast-track" membership. Member states appear largely open to eventual Ukrainian membership, but division between east and west has arisen as to exactly how and when this might happen. The road to Brussels is long and, at times, painful for aspirants. The journey can typically take around a decade, involving labyrinthine negotiations and structural national reforms. The shortest process was for Austria, Finland, and Sweden—all took nearly five years to meet the criteria. Negotiations to expand into eastern Europe took more than 10 years. The existential threat from Russia prompted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his top officials to call for an accelerated process, an appeal which appears to have fallen flat. The EU has acted with … [Read more...] about Ukraine’s EU application is splitting Europe in two
Ivana Trump will tour across the country on a crusade to end adult obesity
President Donald Trump's first wife, Ivana, is reportedly waging a battle against adult obesity in America. Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade 2020: How to watch, live stream
In keeping with the motto that "the show must go on," the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade will continue for the 94th year, but this time around it'll happen without throngs of people lining the route. On Thursday, floats, the Rockettes and numerous other performers will make their way down a shortened parade route in a televised-only event. In keeping with tradition, some of NBC's biggest faces, including Today anchors Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb and weatherman Al Roker, will take charge of the broadcast. The parade will be streamed on NBC so viewers will have the opportunity to watch the celebration on their televisions, as well as on YouTube through Verizon's channel. The live stream will be hosted by Mario Lopez and kick off at 9 a.m. eastern, the same time NBC's coverage begins. Roker has been co-hosting the parade since 1995 and Guthrie has had the responsibility since 2012. This will be the second year that Kotb is serving as co-host for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. … [Read more...] about Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade 2020: How to watch, live stream
Review: Foldable E-Bike Lectric XP Lite is sturdy, fun and a good value
The idea of a foldable electric bike seems gimmicky. Before trying the Lectric XP Lite, I was skeptical that an e-bike would be able to ride like a traditional bike, provide uphill power and still fold up to a compact size. Well, the Lectric XP Lite does all those things and for a compelling $799 price. The Lectric XP Lite feels like a comfortable (and adjustable) BMX-style bike or perhaps a compact mountain bike that only has one gear. While you grip the handlebars and rest your feet on the pedals, it's hard to tell that there's anything unique about the bike. This is a good thing. It's easy to get acclimated to it right away. Even the electric pedal assist and throttle feels very natural compared with other e-bikes'. Once you're done riding, though, you can fold it in half and break down the handlebars to store or transport it. Even though the bike is a reasonable 46 pounds, I personally can't carry it very far folded up and don't believe many people could. So think of its … [Read more...] about Review: Foldable E-Bike Lectric XP Lite is sturdy, fun and a good value
