THE BBC sparked outrage yesterday for giving Remain-backing Star Trek actor Sir Patrick Stewart a prime-time slot to promote his campaign for a second EU referendum. His six-minute interview on the Andrew Marr Show was shown before crucial live interviews with Jeremy Corbyn and Boris Johnson over the Syria airstrikes. Sir Patrick helped launch a new campaign demanding a ‘People’s Vote’ on Brexit - pledging to fight the 2016 vote to leave the EU. The campaign brings together nine grassroots campaigning for a vote and was launched in Camden in north London yesterday along with a string of pro-Remain MPs. But he admitted the campaign was a mask for a second referendum. Organisers decided to brand the campaign a ‘People’s Vote after research found people were overwhelmingly against a second referendum. Sir Patrick said his Star Trek character Jean-Luc Picard and fellow charcter Charles Xavier would have rejected Brexit. He said: “(They) were excellent, … [Read more...] about Fury as BBC gives Sir Patrick Stewart prime slot to promote second EU referendum
Second eu referendum
NON voters would be ‘pivotal’ if a second EU vote was held say a local pro Remain group. Warwick District for Europe asked some 130 residents how they would vote in a second EU referendum. The group says the most interesting find of their results was the discovery of how many previous non voters would now be swayed to back remain. More than 80 per cent of the non voters asked said they would want to remain in the EU, with nearly eight per cent saying they would vote leave and the rest still undecided. A spokesman for the campaign group said the result showed if a second referendum were to take place, previous non voters would ensure the result would be England staying in the European Union. He said: “The really interesting statistics related to non voters in the referendum and how they would vote now. “This local result is in line with recent results nationally such that, if it were translated to actual voting, the voting on Brexit would be very different, with … [Read more...] about Pro Remain group say non voters would be ‘pivotal’ in second EU referendum
More than 4 million people have signed a petition calling for a re-run of the EU referendum following Britain's vote for Brexit. The petition, set up by William Oliver Healey, states: "We the undersigned call upon HM Government to implement a rule that if the Remain or Leave vote is less than 60% based on a turnout less than 75%, there should be another referendum.” Originally launched in May, the page has seen an influx of signatories since Friday, as those unhappy with the referendum result seek to overturn it. The campaign is more than double the size of a 2007 petition urging the Government to abandon plans for pay as you go road pricing which attracted 1.8 million signatures. The petition for a second EU referendum has also gathered far more names than one calling for the meningitis B vaccine to be given to all children, which was signed by more than 820,000 at the beginning of 2016, and one seeking to block Donald Trump from the UK after he … [Read more...] about Petition for second EU referendum reaches 4 million as hundreds attend anti-Brexit protest in London
With less than a year to go until the UK’s formal exit from the European Union, calls for a second referendum on the terms of Brexit are gathering pace. In an article in The Guardian, shadow Northern Ireland secretary Owen Smith said his party could only “serve democracy” by recommending a poll on the Brexit deal. Last month Jeremy Corbyn announced Labour wanted the UK to be a permanent member of a customs union with the EU after Brexit. But Smith, who unsuccessfully challenged Corbyn for the Labour leadership in 2016, says that this is not enough. “Labour needs to do more than just back a soft Brexit or guarantee a soft border in Ireland,” he argues. “Given that it is increasingly obvious that the promises which the Brexiters made to the voters, especially, not only their pledge of an additional £350m a week for the NHS, are never going to be honoured, we have the right to ask if Brexit remains the right choice for the country. And to ask, too, … [Read more...] about Brexit: What are the pros and cons of a second EU referendum?
Jeremy Corbyn has been accused of a "Stalinist purge" after he sacked Owen Smith - who challenged him for the leadership in 2016 - from the Shadow Cabinet. Mr Smith was removed from his job as shadow Northern Ireland secretary after attacking Brexit and urging the Labour Party to campaign for a second EU referendum in a newspaper article. He is replaced by the veteran former minister Tony Lloyd, who only returned to the Commons last year after quitting as an MP in 2012 to become police and crime commissioner for Greater Manchester. With Mr Corbyn already under attack over his response to the Russian poisoning crisis and rows in the party over anti-Semitism, Mr Smith's sacking threatens to reopen the civil war in the Labour Party.Immediately after his dismissal, a defiant Mr Smith tweeted: "Just been sacked by @jeremycorbyn for my long held views on the damage #Brexit will do to the Good Friday Agreement & the economy of the entire U.K."Those views are shared by Labour members & … [Read more...] about Jeremy Corbyn sacks Owen Smith over call for second EU referendum
