Many in New Zealand's film and television industry and the academic world are mourning the death of Dr Geoff Lealand, one of the world’s foremost authorities on both the small and big screens. Lealand, who died suddenly on Saturday morning aged 75, was for many years a familiar figure in the screen and media department at Waikato University, which he joined in 1992. He became renowned through his research, much of which was focussed on how children view and understand television. “He thought children should not be patronised in terms of their understanding of the things they watch,” longtime colleague Ann Hardy said. Moment US military helicopter crashes into warship killing three marines
Dramatic footage has emerged of a deadly US military accident in which a state-of-the-art hybrid aicraft crashed into the side of a warship five years ago. Three marines died and 23 narrowly escaped drowning when the MV-22 Osprey veered into the US Green Bay while trying to land on its deck off the coast of Australia in August 2017. The clip, which surfaced on Saturday, shows the aircraft hovering toward the deck before suddenly veering to one side and hitting the ship. Air traffic controllers are seen sprinting away as a spinning rotorblade careers towards them before the person fiming them ducks for cover. Officials say the collision crushed the cockpit, breaking the pilot’s hip and leg and piercing the hull, causing it to sink after it fell 30 feet into the water. Dead orca wrapped in fishing gear spotted off Oregon in rare entanglement
An orca carcass wrapped in fishing gear has been spotted off the coast of Oregon , triggering a search to recover what may be the first occurrence of a dead killer whale in the state. A fisherman from Salem, Oregon, uploaded a picture of the orca's body wrapped in fishing gear to the website iFish.com, which he estimated to be between 16 and 18 foot long. The orca had a crab pot line wrapped around its tail, and was found around 25 miles out from Newport. "It's a sight I wish I could un-see," the fisherman said in the post. According to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, orcas are most often seen off Depoe Bay and Newport, attracted by the lure of seals and sea lions near the coast. Multiple sightings of the animal have been reported in central coastal Oregon throughout the spring and summer of 2022 so far. Dame Deborah James ’ friend and podcast co-host Lauren Mahon has spoken for the first time since the bowel cancer activist’s death a week ago, describing her as having ‘the most outrageous cackle and twinkle in her eye.’ Mahon shared her grief while being interviewed on BBC Breakfast and said the former head teacher and mother-of-two’s death hadn’t ‘really hit.’ ‘We have moments where it feels very real and a bit overwhelming, but I think it is all a bit surreal. She was the comeback kid, so it’s all been a bit surreal,’ Mahon said. Dame Deborah, known as Bowelbabe, died on June 28 aged 40 , having been diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer in 2016. An official charity set up to continue the legacy of Princess Diana's support for young people received a number of hate comments relating to Prince Harry and Prince William after it marked an awards ceremony hosted on what would have been their mother's 61st birthday. The Diana Awards officially recognize the humanitarian efforts and ingenuity of young people around the world with an official ceremony hosted around the time of the princess' birthday. The charity was set up in the years following her death and since then has had the continued support of the princess' two sons, William and Harry. In 2017 the charity announced their biennial legacy award which was launched by both princes in the year that marked the 20th anniversary of Diana's tragic death in a Paris car crash at the age of 36. Dad of murdered five-year-old fighting for ‘Logan’s Law’ to protect children
The heartbroken dad of murdered Logan Mwangi wants to change the law so that estranged parents are told if social services become involved with their biological children. Benjamin Mwangi did not know his five-year-old boy had been placed on the child protection register in the months before he was killed by his mum, stepdad and stepbrother. Mr Mwangi says Logan’s mum Angharad Williamson had stopped him from having contact with his child when she started dating new partner John Cole. He had not seen Logan for around three years when he was found dead in the River Ogmore in Pandy Park, Bridgend, on the morning of July 31 2021. Logan was dumped ‘like fly-tip rubbish’ by John Cole, 40 and his ‘pure evil’ teenage stepson Craig Mulligan.
