0 Post a comment Tuesday, 10 July 2018 - Local People by Contributed Item - Contributed Item @twitter.com/gem_news [email protected] Penarth sea cadets (T S Glamorgan) held their annual commemoration evening on June 12, to commemorate the day when an Exocet missile hit HMS Glamorgan during the Falklands conflict. The evening started with a presentation by CPO (SCC) John Callaghan, who was a crewmember on the fateful day when the missile struck, and he spoke about events leading up to and after the attack.After a service of commemoration, the youngest member of Penarth Unit laid a wreath. On completion of the service, a number of presentations were made by HM Lord-Lieutenant Morfudd Meredith, the deputy Lord Lieutenant Colin Jones, the Mayor of Penarth Jon Loxton, Roy Clark from the British Warships Association, Penarth SCC chaplain Linda Loxton and a special presentation by CPO (SCC) John Callaghan to the wreath layer, Jsc C Stonehouse. Have you ever been a sea cadet? Well you might spot yourself in our gallery of pictures from years gone by... The sea cadets has existed for more than 160 years - helping to encourage teenagers to become the best they can be. And it’s different from school. There’s a lot of learning, but it’s done through activities – on the water, on land and in the unit – and by volunteers leading by example. Around 14,000 10 to 18-year-olds get together in local units every week - with 9,000 volunteers giving up their time to make it all possible. John Simm has taken the helm of the world-famous Waverley paddle steamer – after plotting a course from Paisley Sea Cadets . The sailor, 30, realised his dream after being appointed master of the Old Lady of the Clyde. He fell in love with the ship while volunteering with the youth group as a lad. Captain Simm rose through the ranks and has been tasked with leading the ship for its busy summer season. He said: “I joined Paisley Sea Cadets when I was still at school. “I took part because my friends were part of the cadets. “My family had no links to sailing at all. “But it sparked a real desire and interest in going to sea. “To be honest, I’m not really sure where it came from.” John will skipper the boat doon the watter to ports across the Clyde. The Merchant Navy officer has been given leave by employers Serco to live out his fantasy. Incorporating various forms of canoeing and kayaking, the Barry unit, coached by civilian instructor Teilo Richardson, had great success and winners will progress to the area competition to be held August 11.For the girls Cdt 1st class Borges won the junior girls sprint, Cdt Williams C won the junior girls time trial, Cdt 1st class Webber and Cdt Jennings took part in the junior girls doubles time trial and sprint and came first in both.While in the boys’ competitions Able Cdt Jake Richardson won both canoe and kayak cross stream, Cdt 1st class Barker won the open boys sprint, Cdt McClean finished first in the junior boys’ time trial; Cdt 1st class Hughes and CDT Gwatkin took … [Read more...] about Sea Cadets in the medals!
0 Post a comment Wednesday, 27 June 2018 - Local People by Contributed Item - Contributed Item @twitter.com/gem_news [email protected] Barry Sea Cadets won both the Junior Boys’ and Junior Girls’ rowing at the District Regatta held at the Barry Community Watersports Centre on Barry Dock recently, and finished second overall The event attracted sea cadets from all over south east Wales who, as well as rowing took part in powerboat and sailboat handling competitions. The Penarth unit were the winners of the powerboat handling competition, while Porthcawl took senior rowing and sailing honours.Sea Cadets provide numerous activities on land and water in the traditions of the Royal Navy.
