Risky work of demining reclaimed ground in Ukraine is underway, but there’s a long, dangerous path ahead
As thousands of women and children fled Ukraine during the early months of the Russian invasion, Ilona decided to stay. She has some skills that have become a high commodity in her country: Ilona can safely clear landmines. When she heard Russian missiles coming down in February, Ilona sent her family abroad where she knew they would be safer. Despite initial fears about staying behind, she told CBS News she decided she had to "get herself together, and get to work." Ilona, 27, started clearing landmines in 2019. She took up the risky job after seeing the work done by members of The HALO Trust, a humanitarian mine clearance organization, in Kramatorsk. Ukraine's forces had already been engaged in a simmering war with Russian-backed separatists around the eastern Ukrainian city for five years when the current invasion began in February. Inspired by the opportunity to save lives, she left her job as a dancer to join the HALO Trust's demining efforts. Judge Who Signed Off On FBI Raid Was Far More Sympathetic When Democrat IRS Official’s 30,000 Emails Disappeared | The Daily Wire
The Florida judge who reportedly signed off on the warrant permitting the FBI to raid the home of former President Trump — where they allegedly looked for classified documents — was far more sympathetic back in the day when tens of thousands of emails of Democrat Lois Lerner, then head of a division of the IRS and harsh critic of conservatives, disappeared. “There was a year-long Congressional investigation before the IRS finally admitted the 2009 through 2011 Lois Lerner’s emails ‘disappeared,’” Robert Wood noted in Forbes . “On Friday, the Internal Revenue Service informed Congressional investigators that it could not recover two years of emails from Lois Lerner, the former head of the agency’s tax-exempt status department,” The Washington Post reported in 2014, adding that Lerner was the focus of the investigation into the IRS forcing additional scrutiny on tax-exempt applications of Tea Party-affiliated organizations. Sir Cliff Richard candidly discusses mental toll of child sexual assault allegations in explosive Operation Yewtree documentary
Sir Cliff Richard will headline a documentary about Operation Yewtree in which he will open up about the impact of being falsely accused of child sexual assault. The Summer Holiday singer was targeted by the three-year Metropolitan Police investigation, which was set up in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal in 2012. Officers searched the 81-year-old’s Berkshire home as part of the operation after receiving an allegation of a historial sex offence involving a boy under 16 dating back to the 1980s in South Yorkshire. The veteran performer denied the claims, was never arrested, faced no charges and was later awarded compensation from the South Yorkshire Police and the BBC for coverage of the case. Titled The Accused: National Treasures On Trial, the upcoming Channel 4 doc will focus on the toll the process had on his career and reputation, as well as reflect on Operation Yewtree’s lasting legacy on the UK’s values, attitudes and culture. Bleak House: Frustration on Capitol Hill
Atlantic FOUNDED IN 1857 by Sanford J. Ungar Jerry Ambro caught on early. He was elected to the House of Representatives from a traditionally Republican area on Long Island in 1974. He became a leader among the seventy-six brash new Democratic congressmen who arrived in Washington the following January, determined to remodel and revolutionize the institution. They deposed three committee chairmen, pushed through a number of significant procedural changes, and established themselves as a force to be reckoned with. It was a heady, exhilarating experience. Before many months had passed, however, Ambro was confronted with a typical problem: the Army Corps of Engineers was planning to dump 250,000 cubic yards of dredged spoil containing heavy metals into Long Island Sound. Although the dumping area was technically in Connecticut waters, Ambro’s constituents were alarmed that the polluted material would drift in their direction, and they thought their congressman should be able to … [Read more...] about Bleak House: Frustration on Capitol Hill
