If we translate Spanish expressions into English word for word, the result often makes no sense. “I take a shit in the milk” does not quite convey the meaning of me cago en la leche, just like “to have bad leg” fails to capture the essence of tener mala pata. Vanity Fair recently asked Spanish actor Antonio Banderas to translate these and other expressions used widely in Spain, as well as a few that are specific to his home city of Málaga. The video has been seen over a million times on Facebook since it was uploaded on April 23. It is part of a series called Slang School, in which “celebrities’ knowledge of their native tongue is put to the test.” Other actors to feature in the series include Salma Hayek, who explains Mexican terms, and Alicia Vikander, who teaches viewers Swedish slang. It is not fully clear why Spaniards use monkeys to convey that something is cute Banderas, who plays Pablo Picasso in the recently premiered … [Read more...] about “I don’t care a pepper”: Antonio Banderas offers crash course in Spanish slang

Martinez is Spanish and married to an American, so for both personal and practical reasons, their children were always going to be bilingual. "We wanted them to have the advantage we haven't had," he tells The Local. In Sweden's larger cities, it often feels like the country is bilingual. Swedes are regularly ranked among the world's best non-native English speakers; English is used on most public signage and in many adverts; and walking down a street in Stockholm, you'll hear it spoken in accents ranging from British to American to Scandinavian. There are dozens of international schools across Sweden, allowing parents to raise their children bilingually, speaking both Swedish and English. But that's just part of the story. More than 200 different languages are spoken by the country's … [Read more...] about Bringing up kids bilingual in Sweden: the tales of six families

Sunday’s FA Cup defeat at Newport County was a good game to miss but Eunan O’Kane’s absence from it did not stop this feeling like a very slow week.“It’s funny, I’ve just had that conversation with Pontus (Jansson),” he said as Leeds United’s players prepared to travel south for this afternoon’s game at Ipswich Town. “It feels like it’s taken a long time to get round to Friday and the match.”Humiliation in the FA Cup has that effect but the result at Newport was barely the half of it. On Monday Leeds lost Samuel Saiz to a six-match ban after Saiz admitted spitting at Newport’s Robbie Willmott. On Tuesday, they ruled Luke Ayling out of the rest of their Championship … [Read more...] about Video: We’ll cope with loss of Leeds United talisman Saiz says O’Kane
