More info Mr Musk’s SpaceX is reportedly looking to deploy six Starlink gateways in England. SpaceX’s Starlink satellite constellations, which beam out high-speed internet signals, require these ground stations to function. It is expected that the expansion to the existing network in the UK would strengthen the network of Starlink’s non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) broadband constellation. Elon Musk says Tesla’s new factories are ‘gigantic money furnaces’ that lose ‘billions’ due to supply chain chaos
Tesla 's CEO Elon Musk said his new car factories are 'losing billions of dollars' due to supply chain woes and battery shortages. 'This factory is losing insane money right now,' he explained. 'We should be operating a lot more cars from this factory versus a very puny amount of cars.' 'Both Berlin and Austin factories are gigantic money furnaces right now. Okay? It's really like a giant roaring sound, which is the sound of money on fire,' he told members of a club of Silicon Valley Tesla owners in Austin in an interview published Wednesday. Musk said Tesla's Texas factory produces a 'tiny' number of cars because of challenges in boosting production of its new '4680' batteries and as tools to make its conventional 2170 batteries are 'stuck in port in China.' Telsa founder and CEO Elon Musk bemoaned the negative impact of supply chain disruptions on the production of electric vehicles at his Berlin and Austin giga-factories, saying that both are losing 'billions' … [Read more...] about Elon Musk says Tesla’s new factories are ‘gigantic money furnaces’ that lose ‘billions’ due to supply chain chaos
Elon Musk has stopped tweeting
Elon Musk’s Twitter activity has been unusually silent of late. The Tesla and SpaceX boss is known as much for his love of the social media site as he is for being the world’s richest person . And while the saga over whether or not he’ll actually buy Twitter rumbles on , his own Twitter account has gone dark over the last week. Musk’s last tweet came on June 21, replying to a tweet about a dispute between SpaceX and the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) about the Starlink satellite system. A day later, he liked a few posts, but hasn’t posted anything more. In the intervening time, his follower count surpassed 100 million – something very few people on Twitter can boast of having. Musk has taken breaks from Twitter in the past. Notably when being on the platform has gotten him some bad PR . But he usually returns within a few days. But this period of silence is coming under closer scrutiny both because of Musk’s ongoing ambition to buy Twitter … [Read more...] about Elon Musk has stopped tweeting
Elon Musk’s Starlink will be ‘unusable’ under 5G plan
SpaceX will suffer major disruption of its Starlink internet service if US regulators allow 5G networks to use a certain radio frequency, Elon Musk’s company has warned. In a note to customers, SpaceX claimed that plans by Dish Network to use the 12GHz spectrum for its mobile service will cause outages for more than three quarters of Starlink users. The internet service relies on a 2,400-strong satellite constellation to beam high-speed broadband to users on the ground through the 12GHz band. A SpaceX study submitted to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) claimed that Starlink user terminals would no longer work if Dish’s ground-based network was granted the same frequency. “If Dish’s lobbying efforts succeed, our study shows that Starlink customers will experience harmful interference more than 77 per cent of the time and total outage of service 74 per cent of the time, rendering Starlink unusable for most Americans,” SpaceX wrote. In an accompanying … [Read more...] about Elon Musk’s Starlink will be ‘unusable’ under 5G plan
Embattled satellite operator slashes debt with investment lifeline
Embattled satellite operator Avanti Communications has won a lifeline from investors that slashes its debt by more than half a billion dollars. The broadband provider said it had "significantly strengthened" its financial position through a deal that makes hedge funds Solus Alternative Asset Management and HPS Investment Partners its biggest shareholders. Avanti had been forced to extend a debt repayment deadline from the end of January to February 28 as it raced to ease the financial strain on the business. The debt-for-equity-swap approved by its six backers will cut its debts from $809m to $264m (£203m) and reduce its interest payments. The move comes as Avanti faces intensifying competition in the satellite sector from Elon Musk and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos , two of the world's richest people. Kyle Whitehill, the chief executive, said the deal will give Avanti more liquidity to support investment. "When Avanti was founded almost 20 years ago, the first steps were … [Read more...] about Embattled satellite operator slashes debt with investment lifeline
NASA, SpaceX to assess potential Starship threat to Crew Dragon pad
SpaceX is building a towering new gantry at the Kennedy Space Center's complex 39A to launch its 394-foot-tall Super Heavy-Starship rocket, but NASA said Thursday it will not grant permission to fly until it assesses the possible threats to a nearby pad used to send astronauts to the space station. The new gantry and launch stand are being built within about 1,000 feet of NASA's original 39A firing stand, now leased by SpaceX, where Falcon 9 rockets blast off carrying cargo and astronauts to the International Space Station. Reuters reported last week that NASA managers are concerned about the possibility of a catastrophic failure on or just above the new Starship pad that could seriously damage the Falcon 9 launch infrastructure, interrupting SpaceX astronaut flights to the space station aboard Crew Dragon capsules. "We all recognize that if you had an early failure like we did on one of the early SpaceX flights, it would be pretty devastating to 39A," Kathy Lueders, NASA's space … [Read more...] about NASA, SpaceX to assess potential Starship threat to Crew Dragon pad
Solar storms are causing satellites to drop from their orbits
Scientists believe that solar weather could be causing satellites to drop out of their orbits. Over the past year, the European Space Agency ’s Swarm constellation – which measures magnetic fields around Earth – started dropping in the atmosphere ten times faster than before. "In the last five, six years, the satellites were sinking about two and a half kilometers [1.5 miles] a year," Anja Stromme, ESA’s Swarm mission manager, told Space.com . "But since December last year, they have been virtually diving. The sink rate between December and April has been 20 kilometers [12 miles] per year." It’s thought that the new solar cycle – which started concurrently with these phenomena – could be responsible. More solar wind activity, as well as sunspots, solar flares, and coronal mass ejections, are being generated at an increasing rate. "There is a lot of complex physics that we still don’t fully understand going on in the upper layers of the atmosphere where it … [Read more...] about Solar storms are causing satellites to drop from their orbits
UK’s first spaceport – how much does it cost and where will it be based?
When you think of blasting into space, NASA or SpaceX may first come to mind, fuelled by American dollars. The UK, while it has always participated in space exploration , observation and scientific understanding, has never fully dived into the cosmic business. That is about to change, with the company Space Forge establishing the country’s first and Europe’s only spaceport this summer. The world is entering a second space race, with Elon Musk heading to Mars, the USA planning a base on the Moon and countries such as China and India blasting off on a regular basis. It’s an exciting time for anyone that wonders what’s out there, but space exploration always equals money, and the new UK spaceport is no exception. In the current cost of living crisis, can such an endeavour really be justified? How much will the UK spaceport cost? Space Forge, the company behind the UK spaceport, managed to raise £7.6 million of international seed funding last year in the hopes of … [Read more...] about UK’s first spaceport – how much does it cost and where will it be based?
NASA is preparing to build new rocket launch site at Cape Canaveral for SpaceX’s Starship and Super Heavy spacecraft
SpaceX is moving forward with its plans to construct a new Starship launch pad at NASA ’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral. The Elon Musk-led company requested the American space agency conduct environmental assessments of its Launch Complex 49, which is an unbuilt launch facility located at the northern end of the center. Musk announced plans of setting up an orbital launch pad for the massive rocket on December 3, but only sharing in a tweet that construction has begun. ‘The 175-acre site, located north of Launch Complex 39B within the center’s security perimeter, would support the launch and landing of the company’s Starship and Super Heavy launch vehicle,’ NASA shared in a press release released Wednesday evening. ‘NASA and SpaceX are moving forward with the initial environmental analysis before concluding a potential agreement to develop the property.’ Scroll down for video SpaceX has requested NASA conduct environmental assessments of its Launch … [Read more...] about NASA is preparing to build new rocket launch site at Cape Canaveral for SpaceX’s Starship and Super Heavy spacecraft
The lessons military planners are learning from the Ukraine invasion and what it means if the UK went to war with Russia
Throughout the Cold War, Britain's military planners thought long and hard about what was needed to beat the Soviets if World War Three ever broke out. Assuming both sides weren't annihilated by nuclear weapons, they assumed a Soviet invasion would lead to a war in western Europe, and trained and equipped UK forces would need to counter that threat. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, it was believed that the threat was no longer there, and came from other places. But the invasion of Ukraine has changed all of that. While analysts say a direct conflict between NATO and Russia is unlikely, it is possible - particularly in the Baltic states, or Finland. The Ukraine war is providing a golden opportunity for British and NATO military planners to observe Russia fighting on the battlefield and to plan accordingly. Here, according to former Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) head Professor Michael Clarke and retired Air Vice Marshal Sean Bell, are a few of the lessons … [Read more...] about The lessons military planners are learning from the Ukraine invasion and what it means if the UK went to war with Russia
