Earth Day 2021 Google Doodle animation shows how ‘one small act’ can save planet
Earth Day is celebrated in a Google Doodle that "highlights how everyone can plant the seed to a brighter future—one sapling at a time!" The Earth Day Google Doodle video begins with an image of a woman lying underneath a tree and a little girl holding a sapling. Then, the video sees the child plant the sapling and watch it grow into a tree as she grows old. The old woman then gives a sapling to a little boy, and the cycle repeats again and again until there is a forest. Sophie Diao, the artist behind the video, said she was inspired by "the stories of people who had planted trees when they were very young and cared for them throughout their lives, and people—sometimes as a community, other times working individually—who made it a goal to reforest a place, whether it be one the densest cities in the world or an arid desert that used to be lush and green. "Once I had the seed of the idea of animating a little girl growing old with a tree, the rest of the Doodle story fell … [Read more...] about Earth Day 2021 Google Doodle animation shows how ‘one small act’ can save planet
Creature with ‘mouth but no anus’ is not earliest human ancestor, study finds
Scientists have discovered that a curious creature with a mouth but no anus, is not the earliest human ancestor, as previously thought. A new study suggests that the mysterious microscopic creature is instead part of a different family tree. Resembling an angry purple Minion, the Saccorhytus is a spikey, wrinkly sack, with a large mouth surrounded by spines and holes. These were thought to be pores for gills, a primitive feature of the deuterostome group. These are animals typically characterised by their anus forming before their mouth and related to our human ancestors. But analysis of 500 million-year-old fossils from China suggests the holes around the creature’s mouth are bases of spines that broke away during the preservation of the fossils. Yunhuan Liu, professor in Palaeobiology at Chang’an University, China, said: ‘Some of the fossils are so perfectly preserved that they look almost alive. ‘Saccorhytus was a curious beast, with a mouth but no anus, and … [Read more...] about Creature with ‘mouth but no anus’ is not earliest human ancestor, study finds
Kate Greville realised she was being ‘lured’ into relationship after reading psychology book
R yan Giggs' ex-girlfriend said she realised she was being "lured" into an affair with him after reading a psychology book, a court has heard. The ex-Wales manager is accused of assaulting Kate Greville, 36, and subjecting her to controlling and coercive behaviour from August 2017 to November 2020. Ms Greville told jurors at Manchester Crown Court that she had read How to Win Friends and Influence People for work purposes, and the ex-footballer's actions "mind games" reminded her of it. The defence told Manchester Crown Court the suggestion Mr Giggs lured Ms Greville into a relationship with psychological tricks was "rubbish". During her research of coercion, Ms Greville - who said she was "really into psychology" - determined that Mr Giggs had "narcissistic personality disorder" after a Google search. Two lost phones The court also heard how Ms Greville had lost two phones after police requested to review them for evidence. One fell out of her pocket when she was trying … [Read more...] about Kate Greville realised she was being ‘lured’ into relationship after reading psychology book
Women’s safety: ‘Man taking pictures through my window scared me’
By Aimee Thomas Published 3 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Student Sophie Morgan was terrified when she looked through her curtains to see a man photographing her. "I opened the curtains and saw a man on my roof outside, filming me and staring right at me," recalled Sophie. That chilling moment was Sophie's catalyst to start a group that helps women who have been a victim of sexual harassment. Her group also helps women get home safely at night without feeling frightened. Sophie had heard of incidents of women being sexually harassed in Swansea. The university student thought little was being done to help women's safety, so she decided to act. Safety concerns The issue of women's safety was brought into sharp focus across the UK following the murders of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa in 2021. Women across the country took … [Read more...] about Women’s safety: ‘Man taking pictures through my window scared me’
Will R. Kelly go to jail? If found guilty, he could face decades in prison
R. Kelly was charged with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse in Illinois's Cook County Court on Friday, according to a Chicago Sun-Times Friday report. The charges related to the alleged sexual assault of four victims, three of which the Sun-Times said were between 13 and 16 years old. A Chicago judge signed off on a warrant for the R&B singer's arrest. The Class 2 felony charge carries a three- to seven-year sentence in the state of Illinois. If Kelly is found guilty on all 10 charges, he could face up to 70 years in prison. Kelly is expected to appear in a Chicago court regarding the charges on March 8, according to the report. While unconfirmed, the charges likely stem from new evidence attorney Michael Avenatti gave to Kim Foxx, Chicago's Cook County state attorney. Avenatti said he received two VHS tapes that allegedly showed Kelly engaging in sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl. While the date of the videos was not released, Avenatti said the … [Read more...] about Will R. Kelly go to jail? If found guilty, he could face decades in prison

‘I murdered Lachlan Gebhardt’: How a confession to murder was ruled inadmissible
ALDEN WILLIAMS/STUFF Joe Bradley and Kelly Phillips were among the first on the scene of the 2019 crash that killed 6-year-old Lachlan Gebhardt. This video was filmed a year after the crash. After a fiery crash that killed his 6-year-old son, Niklas Gebhardt confessed to murdering him. SAM SHERWOOD reports on why this confession was kept under wraps. On October 30, 2020, almost a year after Niklas Gebhardt survived a fiery crash that killed his 6-year-old son, he was on his push-bike with one thing in mind. To confess. On November 5, 2019, he had driven north out of Rangiora and onto long flat Lehmans Rd. His son Lachlan was in the back seat of the car. Gebhardt began to speed up and dangerously overtook another car. The manoeuvre required him to swerve sharply back into his lane to avoid colliding with an oncoming car. Kate Greville lied to Ryan Giggs about having cancerous cells, court hears
Follow today's live court action R yan Giggs's ex-girlfriend has revealed that she lied to the former footballer about having cancerous cells detected in a smear test so that she "would not have to have sex with him". In late October 2020, just days before an alleged headbutt at the centre of the trial, Kate Greville, 36, told a friend she was going to end her contraception in secret. When Mr Giggs became suspicious that something was afoot, the PR executive told him: "I had a smear test…And I had cancerous cells, I have to go to hospital on Thursday." The ex-footballer responded in shock, and asked her what exactly the test had shown, to which she responded "high-grade dyskaryosis". Chris Daw QC, for the defence, said that the pair continued to have "regular and enthusiastic sex" aftwerwards, and referring to the contraceptive coil that Ms Greville was getting removed without letting her then boyfriend know, "Your plan was to get pregnant by Mr Giggs, wasn’t it? "No, … [Read more...] about Kate Greville lied to Ryan Giggs about having cancerous cells, court hears
