It’s actually really hard to dislike Sarah Ferguson , Duchess of York. Engagingly honest and eager to please, she’s full of compliments for other people. And as she speaks with so much pride about her latest venture (more to come on that later), it’s almost impossible not to get caught up with her girlish enthusiasm. I first met Sarah years ago, when we were both a lot younger, and as we chat now, it’s clear that she hasn’t changed a bit in those two decades since we last spoke. I can still remember her telling me back then how she was worried that she was looking ‘big’ – and yet she was a healthy size 14. Now, she admits very honestly that weight is still playing on her mind. ‘It’s always going to be my trigger point and where I go to first when I want to self-sabotage, she tells me. However, it’s hardly surprising that the way she looks has been a constant source of concern for the mum-of- two. She reveals how she was often teased for her size – ‘they used … [Read more...] about Sarah, Duchess of York: ‘I thought my mum left me because I’d cut my hair’

‘I think of her all the time’: Sarah Ferguson reflects on ‘closest friend’ Princess Diana
Sarah Ferguson , Duchess of York, has revealed she often thinks ‘sadly’ about the late Princess Diana now she herself is a grandmother. The 62-year-old, who became a member of the royal family after she married Prince Andrew , Duke of York in 1986, spoke fondly of her expanding brood, with both her daughters having recently welcomed new arrivals. Princess Eugenie , 32, welcomed son August, 15 months, shortly after her wedding to Jack Brooksbank in 2018. Meanwhile, Beatrice, 33, had baby Sienna with husband Edoardo Mozzi in September 2021. And while Sarah is an active part of her grandchildren’s lives, reading them bedtimes stories and ‘playing trucks’ alongside them, she cannot help but feel sad when she thinks that the late Princess of Wales – whom she describes as a ‘close friend’ – never got to meet her own grandchildren. ‘She would have loved life as a grandmother and she would have been so proud,’ she explained in an exclusive interview with Metro. ‘We would have … [Read more...] about ‘I think of her all the time’: Sarah Ferguson reflects on ‘closest friend’ Princess Diana
‘It’s brought me a new-found confidence’ – Sarah Ferguson on discovering the joy of writing at 62
Sarah Ferguson has revealed her new career as a novelist has given her an unexpected confidence boost. The 62-year-old is releasing the paperback version of her first book , Her Heart for a Compass, which she wrote for publishing giants Mills and Boon. When the debut novel was first released, it charted incredibly well, making the elusive Sunday Times Bestsellers List. Having started the novel as a lockdown passion project, the Duchess of York has admitted she found the process ‘exhilarating’. ‘I wrote my novel during the pandemic and that was my go-to place,’ she explained. ‘When the box arrived with the first copies of the book, I had to smell it, touch it and re-read it. It was exhilarating. ‘My English teachers thought I’d amount to nothing, but this has taught me, at my age, to believe in myself.’ Sarah, or ‘Fergie’ as she was dubbed by the press, has not always been brimming with self-belief. The Duchess, who faced widespread derision when she and former … [Read more...] about ‘It’s brought me a new-found confidence’ – Sarah Ferguson on discovering the joy of writing at 62

Wayne Rooney blasts Manchester United players for lack of effort in blistering attack
Wayne Rooney has launched a blistering attack on Manchester United’s current squad, accusing them of an unacceptable lack of effort. The former England striker, who scored a club record 253 goals for United and is now Derby manager, said last week’s 5-0 humiliating loss to Liverpool was down to the players rather than manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, although he stopped short of giving his former Old Trafford team-mate his full backing. "There are very educated people at the top of Manchester United," Rooney said. "They will be looking to see how to move forward, whether that’s with Solskjaer or without. "The players have to look at themselves. It’s too easy for the manager to take all the stick when those players are being paid a lot of money to do the job and I don’t think they’re doing it well enough. "There is a big responsibility on them. They are world-class, international players and a club like United need more. Those players need to feel hurt when they lose. Secret to writing a Mills & Boon book – by a woman who has written 60
Nobody understands romance like Marguerite Kaye – who has penned 60 historical novels and novellas for Mills and Boon – her latest, Her Heart for a Compass, written alongside Sarah, Duchess of York. So can anyone write a bestselling romance? Here, Marguerite, 40, shares her secrets of success… Never give up I still have my first rejection letter from Mills and Boon. They were so encouraging, I tried again, and my next book was accepted. I had studied a law degree, and spent years in a job I hated, as a computer programme manager. Finally, I took redundancy, and that gave me the chance to write. So if you think you have a story in your head – write it down. Put characters before plot I always start with my characters. They come first – before plot. I think about what kind of person they are, and then wonder what would happen if this hero met that heroine. For my current book, I started wondering about people who suddenly disappear from their own lives – and I wondered … [Read more...] about Secret to writing a Mills & Boon book – by a woman who has written 60
Duchess of York writes racy novel inspired by her own love life
Sarah Ferguson is writing a racy romance novel which she says will draw on ‘many parallels’ from her own life. The Duchess of York’s debut novel, Her Heart For A Compass, tells a fictional account of the life and love story of her great-great-aunt Lady Margaret Montagu Douglas Scott. Romantic fiction publisher Mills & Boon describes it as an ‘immersive historical saga’ that ‘sweeps the reader from the drawing rooms of Victoria’s court and the grand country houses of Scotland and Ireland, to the slums of London and the mercantile bustle of 1870s New York’. It follows Lady Margaret ‘who desires to break the mould, follow her internal compass – her heart – and discover her raison d’etre – falling in love along the way’. Sarah revealed she came across Lady Margaret after researching her ancestry and became fascinated because Margaret is her middle name. She told how she took inspiration from her own experiences when writing the work. The duchess was pictured in … [Read more...] about Duchess of York writes racy novel inspired by her own love life
Wednesday morning news briefing: UK’s retort to EU trade war threat
Liz Truss has insisted that the UK "will not shy away" from taking action on the Northern Ireland Protocol. The Foreign Secretary last night told Brussels its proposed solutions would make the situation worse after EU leaders threatened a trade war . She is preparing to announce that the UK will unilaterally change parts of the protocol – which defines post-Brexit trading terms between mainland Britain and Northern Ireland – as early as next week. Ministers are expected to point to the impasse over power-sharing in Northern Ireland in the wake of last week's elections as proof that the protocol is unsustainable. There were warnings from the Continent about potential economic consequences if the UK reneges on promises it made in the 2019 Brexit withdrawal agreement. But, as political editor Ben Riley-Smith reports, Ms Truss issued a retort . Meanwhile, Boris Johnson used yesterday's Queen's Speech to say that helping families with the cost of living crunch and … [Read more...] about Wednesday morning news briefing: UK’s retort to EU trade war threat

The Prime Minister did not rule out introducing a levy on the excess profits of energy firms but he made clear his opposition to the policy. He told LBC Radio: “I don’t like them [windfall taxes]. I don’t think they are the right way forward. I want those companies to make big, big investment.” The Government has argued that imposing an additional tax on the companies would damage their ability to invest in crucial new energy sources for the UK. The Great Dollar Squeeze of 2022 is causing global havoc
The rocketing US dollar is draining global liquidity and tightening conditions violently for large parts of the international financial system, and for the interlinked nexus of credit contracts and derivatives. The Federal Reserve’s broad dollar index is the highest in real terms since modern data began. The market dollar index (DXY) is the highest since the end of the dotcom bubble two decades ago - when the US was the unchallenged global hegemon, at the peak of its post-Cold War strategic and technological ascendancy. CrossBorderCapital says global liquidity has been contracting at a rate of 24pc (annualised) in dollar terms over the last three months. This is chiefly a US story. The US monetary base has fallen from a peak of $6.47 trillion to $5.57 trillion since mid-December as the Fed winds down quantitative easing , and the US Treasury rebuilds its cash reserve at the Fed - which takes money out of the economy. Something was bound to snap, and snap it has over the … [Read more...] about The Great Dollar Squeeze of 2022 is causing global havoc
