Ukraine war: Latvia MPs declare Russia a ‘state sponsor of terrorism’

August 11, 2022 by www.euronews.com

Latvia MPs have officially declared Russia a "state sponsor of terrorism" amid the war in Ukraine. The parliament declared its neighbour's actions amount to "genocide against the Ukrainian people", according to a statement published on Thursday. MPs also called on other European countries to "express the same opinion". Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba said he was "grateful" for the announcement and that the declaration was "timely". Russia "uses suffering and intimidation as tools in its attempts to weaken the morale of the Ukrainian people and armed forces, and to paralyse the functioning of the state in order to occupy Ukraine," the parliament statement said. The text was supported by all 67 lawmakers who took part in the vote in the 100-seat Saeima. MPs have also accused Moscow of deploying internationally banned munitions "to spread fear and kill civilians". The European Union member state stressed that Russia's invasion was carried out "with … [Read more...] about Ukraine war: Latvia MPs declare Russia a ‘state sponsor of terrorism’

Our attention has waned, Russia’s nuclear threat hasn’t | Opinion

August 10, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

As Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine staggers through its sixth month , the risk of a catastrophic nuclear war between Russia and NATO grows with each bloody day. That might come as a surprise to Americans, for whom the conflict is now mostly an abstraction. But unless Russian and Ukrainian leaders can find an off-ramp for this destructive conflict, the tiny but real chance of Armageddon will compound like interest on a loan. There are multiple red flags suggesting that we are in more danger than we realize—much more so than when the invasion began. Russia is using Europe's largest nuclear plant, Zaporizhzhia, as a shield to launch artillery attacks, a situation ripe for catastrophe. How would Western countries react to a meltdown triggered by Russian malfeasance, or one caused by an errant Ukrainian air or drone strike? What if Russia triggered a Chernobyl-style disaster and attempted to pin the blame on someone else as a pretext for nuclear escalation? Russian President … [Read more...] about Our attention has waned, Russia’s nuclear threat hasn’t | Opinion

August 11, 2022 by www.euronews.com

1. More shelling damages radiation sensors at Ukraine nuclear plant Several radiation sensors at Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia power plant were damaged on Thursday following more bombings. “The situation is worsening, radioactive substances are located nearby and several radiation sensors have been damaged,” said Ukrainian operator Energoatom, reporting that the site had once again been hit earlier today. Kyiv and Moscow blame one another for the strikes on Europe's largest nuclear plant. According to Energoatom, the attacks "damaged [a] sewage pumping station" and caused smoke to begin rising around the nuclear plant in southern Ukraine. "At present, no contamination has been detected at the station and the level of radioactivity is normal," said one Ukrainian official, pointing out that "several tons" of radioactive waste is stored at the site. The strikes came ahead of a UN meeting on Thursday afternoon over Zaporizhzhia, called by Russia, who seized the site early … [Read more...] about Ukraine war: Zaporizhzhia bombed, more military aid, Swiss ‘no longer’ neutral
