Ukraine war: Latvia MPs declare Russia a ‘state sponsor of terrorism’
Latvia MPs have officially declared Russia a "state sponsor of terrorism" amid the war in Ukraine. The parliament declared its neighbour's actions amount to "genocide against the Ukrainian people", according to a statement published on Thursday. MPs also called on other European countries to "express the same opinion". Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba said he was "grateful" for the announcement and that the declaration was "timely". Russia "uses suffering and intimidation as tools in its attempts to weaken the morale of the Ukrainian people and armed forces, and to paralyse the functioning of the state in order to occupy Ukraine," the parliament statement said. The text was supported by all 67 lawmakers who took part in the vote in the 100-seat Saeima. MPs have also accused Moscow of deploying internationally banned munitions "to spread fear and kill civilians". The European Union member state stressed that Russia's invasion was carried out "with … [Read more...] about Ukraine war: Latvia MPs declare Russia a ‘state sponsor of terrorism’
Our attention has waned, Russia’s nuclear threat hasn’t | Opinion
As Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine staggers through its sixth month , the risk of a catastrophic nuclear war between Russia and NATO grows with each bloody day. That might come as a surprise to Americans, for whom the conflict is now mostly an abstraction. But unless Russian and Ukrainian leaders can find an off-ramp for this destructive conflict, the tiny but real chance of Armageddon will compound like interest on a loan. There are multiple red flags suggesting that we are in more danger than we realize—much more so than when the invasion began. Russia is using Europe's largest nuclear plant, Zaporizhzhia, as a shield to launch artillery attacks, a situation ripe for catastrophe. How would Western countries react to a meltdown triggered by Russian malfeasance, or one caused by an errant Ukrainian air or drone strike? What if Russia triggered a Chernobyl-style disaster and attempted to pin the blame on someone else as a pretext for nuclear escalation? Russian President … [Read more...] about Our attention has waned, Russia’s nuclear threat hasn’t | Opinion
Ukraine war: Zaporizhzhia bombed, more military aid, Swiss ‘no longer’ neutral
1. More shelling damages radiation sensors at Ukraine nuclear plant Several radiation sensors at Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia power plant were damaged on Thursday following more bombings. “The situation is worsening, radioactive substances are located nearby and several radiation sensors have been damaged,” said Ukrainian operator Energoatom, reporting that the site had once again been hit earlier today. Kyiv and Moscow blame one another for the strikes on Europe's largest nuclear plant. According to Energoatom, the attacks "damaged [a] sewage pumping station" and caused smoke to begin rising around the nuclear plant in southern Ukraine. "At present, no contamination has been detected at the station and the level of radioactivity is normal," said one Ukrainian official, pointing out that "several tons" of radioactive waste is stored at the site. The strikes came ahead of a UN meeting on Thursday afternoon over Zaporizhzhia, called by Russia, who seized the site early … [Read more...] about Ukraine war: Zaporizhzhia bombed, more military aid, Swiss ‘no longer’ neutral

Sudan’s bold challenge to authoritarianism
By Fergal Keane Published 27 April 2019 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Certain moments in history offer the possibility of change, not just in one place but as a signal in millions of lives and beyond national borders. What is unfolding in Sudan has the potential to shape an epoch on the continent of Africa. I stress the word potential. The triumph of a peaceful pluralist dispensation is far from guaranteed in Sudan. Negotiations with the military elite have not yet established the parameters or personalities that would rule the country in a transition to full democracy. Will the transition be two years or four years? Will the military retain control of security policy and ministries? How will cabinet posts be divided between the constituent parts of the opposition - civil society and established political parties? Big questions but none can detract from the … [Read more...] about Sudan’s bold challenge to authoritarianism
When Biden Went to China
On April 19, 1979, Senator Joe Biden of Delaware was in Beijing, meeting with China’s paramount leader, Deng Xiaoping, when he put Washington’s nascent friendship with the Communists to the test. That Biden was sitting there at all was remarkable. The United States and China had been implacable foes for decades. In Washington, Deng and his cadres were seen as a dangerous arm of the Red menace, their conquest of China 30 years earlier bitterly lamented as its “loss” to godless Communism. In Beijing, the Americans were viewed as merciless imperialists, defenders of the Nationalists, the Communists’ mortal enemy ensconced on the island of Taiwan. In 1971, when National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger initially broke the ice with the Chinese Communists, he had to sneak into Beijing secretly. Biden arrived quite publicly as part of a five-member delegation from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. His six-day tour included visits to a school, factories, and a commune. Still, … [Read more...] about When Biden Went to China

Funeral home worker, 71, told he’s ‘dead’ and has already been buried in grave
A man in Malaysia found out he was dead after he tried to file a report to the police. Low Choo Choon, who works in the funeral industry, was told of his "death" after he tried to hand in a deed about a grave site. The hearse driver, 71, and his wife had owned two grave sites for around 20 years but had decided to give them to someone else. READ MORE: Bloke told he can't register for new ID card because he's been dead for 25 years For financial reasons, the couple decided to go for cremation instead and were looking to transfer their sites to a relative. During the process though, Low realised he had lost the paperwork and headed to the police station to file a report, FMT reports. He was turned away, however, because officers at the station said his status was currently deceased. Black triangle UFO left US fighter jet ‘hopelessly outclassed’ & ‘moved like no known aircraft’ as it buzzed warship
A UFO "hopelessly outclassed" a US fighter plane as the craft intercepted a black triangle shaped object lurking over a warship. US military documents show the mysterious object moved in ways "not possible for any known aircraft" during the chilling incident in the 1960s. US Navy destroyer USS Gyatt was at the centre of the extraordinary encounter which saw an unknown object spend five nights menacing the ship. Declassified files show how the destroyer encountered the mysterious object multiple times in November 1964 while sailing around 200 miles from Puerto Rico in the Atlantic Ocean. It was tracked on the ship's radar and is reported to have have made extraordinary manoeuvres at incredible speed - while also being able to suddenly move slowly at low altitudes. The object was also tracked by a radar station as it is reported to have hit speeds at up to 4,400mph.
