Report: Italy to propose ending ban on EBRD lending to Russia
MOSCOW, Jun 29 (PRIME) -- Italy will propose ending a ban on European development bank lending to Russia in a sign of the new government in Rome’s wish for closer ties with Moscow, the Financial Times reported late on Thursday citing diplomatic sources. Giuseppe Conte, Italian prime minister, is to use a dinner of bloc leaders in Brussels on Thursday night to suggest resuming European Bank for Reconstruction and Development lending to small and medium sized businesses in Russia, E.U. diplomats said. The move comes after Conte backed President Donald Trump’s call this month for Russia to be readmitted to the G7. Italy has always been hesitant over European sanctions on Russia but it has not previously suggested concrete measures to relax restrictions. Italy calls for the de-escalation of EU sanctions against Russia
EU sanctions against Russia should not be automatic, prime minister Giuseppe Conte said on Wednesday. On Thursday Conte is expected to make the case for the resumption of funding for Russian SME’s in Brussels. The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have seized funding Russian businesses over the last five years. Rome wants to resume funding. “There should be nothing automatic about the renewal of sanctions,” Conte told the parliament, in the eve of a meeting in Brussels that will decide whether or not to extend sanctions against Russia. Conte pointed to the damage for Italian firms. According to Italy’s public news agency ANSA, Conte will make the case for a policy shift after German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron inform their partners on the implementation of the Minsk accords.
