Construction on a new Navy ship has started in San Diego named after slain gay rights leader Harvey Milk. Milk was the first openly gay man elected in the state of California. The ship, which is being built at NASSCO San Diego, will ultimately become a fleet oiler which will be used to replenish fuel, oil and dry goods to Navy ships at sea. Kathy Baker, a logistics engineer with 45 years at NASSCO, made the ceremonial first cut of steel for the ship. Boy, 13, arrested after college student, 18, stabbed while walking through park
A 13-year-old boy has been arrested after a college student was stabbed while walking through a park earlier this week. New York City police arrested the boy after Tessa Majors, 18, was stabbed multiple times with a knife on Wednesday evening during an apparent mugging in a Manhattan park. Ms Majors was walking through Harlem's Morningside Park near her school, Barnard College when she was attacked, according to the New York Police Department. Police believe there were up to three attackers. Preliminary reports suggest Tessa was stabbed several times in the face, neck, and under her arm after she resisted her attackers. The victim was able to stagger out of the park to seek help at a nearby school security booth, but was declared dead at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital. MPs call for overhaul in oversight of England’s academy school chains
Parents are being “left in the dark” over who really runs schools in England, according to parliament’s education committee. It has called for the government to overhaul the oversight of academy chains after a string of high-profile failures. Robert Halfon, the Conservative MP who chairs the committee, signalled to the the new education secretary, Damian Hinds, that the system of regulation had created overlaps and confusion, allowing some multi-academy trusts (Mats) to escape oversight. “We are particularly concerned by the extent to which failing trusts are stripping assets from their schools. It is not clear to us that all schools are benefiting from joining Mats, or that trusts are providing value for money,” Halfon said in a letter to Lord Agnew, the academies minister. Tributes have been paid to 'amazing' and 'very talented' freshman Tessa Majors who was brutally stabbed to death near Barnard College's Manhattan campus. Majors, from Charlottesville, Virginia, was killed in Morningside Park at around 5.30pm on Wednesday by two men who allegedly demanded money from her before stabbing her multiple times. Her friends and family have paid tribute to the 18-year-old, who was described as a 'great performer' who had a 'commanding presence' on the stage.
