FOOTBALL: Turvy met topsy at Massey University in the men’s Federation League when North End visited campus. But probably one of the few people who weren’t totally surprised when the students lost to North End on Saturday was Massey coach Donald Piper. Because his research showed whenever they have met over the past few seasons, the visiting side has ended up the winner. And so it was again this time when you could tear up the form book after North End put three unanswered goals past Massey to win 3-0. READ MORE: Pressure on Marist men to beat Whanganui Athletic Federation League showdown will decide season outcome Coach shoulders blame for Massey's crushing 6-0 defeat to Havelock North Wanderers Until Saturday, North End hadn’t scored a league goal, let alone won a game this season. Massey on the other hand were luxuriating unbeaten in second place, so had plenty of reason to think they could deal with lowly North End. Smiley: Not parting of the waters, but close
There have been many stories about the virtually unlimited powers of Huey Long when he was Louisiana's governor. Here's one Rick Marshall, of Baton Rouge, heard from his grandparents: "They arrived at the Port Allen-Baton Rouge ferry landing a minute late, to see the boat departing for the other side of the river. 29 Plays and Musicals We Can’t Wait to See This Summer
Photo-Illustration: Vulture; Photos by Joan Marcus, Maria Baranova, Park Avenue Armory and LaMaMa What theater do you seek out when it’s hot? Effort is difficult when the temperature rises. So let’s make it easy: You should go see whatever won a Tony; you should also go see whatever didn’t. The city didn’t win one, for instance, and New Yorkers can just wander around our own streets and find performance. Some of our best theatrical experiences in the summer take place outdoors: In the parks and plazas and squares, you’ll surely bump into some Molière or Shakespeare, and not just from the Public Theater. Apart from a few tentpole pieces here and there, though, we aren’t quite back up at pre-shutdown levels of programming. Still, there’s more than enough to keep you out and about through Labor Day, dazzled by what the theater has to offer. Travel chaos looms as rail workers vote overwhelmingly for national strike
A nationwide rail strike has been voted through in a move that threatens travel chaos and could see all trains cancelled after 7pm. The RMT union announced on Tuesday evening that its 40,000 members, across Network Rail and 13 out of 15 train operators, had voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action in a dispute over pay and working conditions. These were Chiltern Railways, Cross Country Trains, Greater Anglia, LNER, East Midlands Railway, c2c, Great Western Railway, Northern Trains, South Eastern Railway, South Western Railway, TransPennine Express, Avanti West Coast and West Midlands Trains. Members at Govia Thameslink (including Gatwick Express) voted against strikes but in favour of other forms of industrial action, while workers on the Isle of Wight's Island Line (where the union has 30 members) rejected all forms of industrial action. Union bosses will now decide when to call strikes - potentially starting in just two weeks - which will cripple the rail network. … [Read more...] about Travel chaos looms as rail workers vote overwhelmingly for national strike
