The United Kingdom is officially hosting the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 . After winners Ukraine were forced to pull out, the honour of hosting the annual event was passed on to the UK and the BBC , following Sam Ryder ’s iconic performance. The Space Man singer soared to second place in the 2022 competition, behind Ukraine’s folk-rap group Kalush Orchestra, who won with their impactful song Stefania. Now, seven UK cities have been shortlisted to put on the annual spectacle – with the BBC to make a further announcement in due course. So, who could be hosting? Paul Ryder, who has died suddenly aged 58, was a musician whose bass guitar-playing was the funky heartbeat of the Happy Mondays, the band he founded alongside his older brother Shaun; with their potent fusion of rock and dance music – and their gargantuan appetite for drugs – they were in the vanguard of the “Madchester” era of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Paul Anthony Ryder was born on April 24 1964 in Little Hulton, a suburb of Salford, 20 months after Shaun. Their mother Linda was a nursery nurse, their father Derek a postman. As teenagers, both lads were in regular trouble but, inspired by punk, they knew they wanted to be in a band. It's no secret many elderly find new technology can be baffling. So a tech-savvy actor has set up a special project to guide people through the mysteries of Zoom, WhatsApp and social media. The scheme, Tek Eagles, teaches elderly members of the Pakistani community how to use their smartphones. The project, which is run by the non-profit Alchemy arts, was set up by movie star Adil Mohammed Javed in 2019. “We did a project called digital engagement where we used laptops and iPads and I just found that a bit tricky for the elderly community because it meant they were doing a lot more of saving passwords and accessing emails and accessing things other things, so I wanted it to teach them something simpler”, Mr Javed said. The former Manchester United star and Wales manager, 48, is accused of using controlling and coercive behaviour and assaulting Kate Greville. Mr Giggs is charged with causing her actual bodily harm, and of the common assault of her younger sister, Emma Greville. He denies all charges. The pair moved in together after he asked her to live with him in Worsley, Greater Manchester.
