A “summer sale” for Channel migrants is fuelling a rise in crossings with people smugglers slashing prices by as much as £1,500 per person, it has emerged. Social media adverts, discovered on Monday by The Telegraph, saw the traffickers offering “bargain” prices and crossings on small boats that have “never been cheaper,” down from £5,000 to as little as £3,500 per migrant. The promotions were primarily targeted at Albanians who accounted for four in 10 of the nearly 3,000 migrants who crossed the Channel during a six-week period this summer. Border Force experts suggested the smugglers may be cutting prices to open up new markets like the Albanians previously unable to afford the charges. MPs on the home affairs committee have also claimed that gangs may be exploiting the court-enforced delay in deportations of illegal migrants to Rwanda to persuade them to make the crossing now before the flights start. The disclosures come as another estimated 300 Channel … [Read more...] about ‘Summer sale’ for Channel migrants fuels record crossings

Rail company cuts timetables and halts ticket sales due to ‘unofficial strike’
Short-notice strike action has seen a train operator slash its timetables and widespread delays are expected from this weekend. Avanti West Coast, which runs services on the west coast mainline between London , Birmingham , Manchester and Glasgow, accused train drivers’ union Aslef of carrying out ‘unofficial strike action’ from Saturday. Services between London Euston and Manchester are expected to be the worst affected, with frequencies reduced from three trains per hour to just one from Sunday. The company has also paused sales of train tickets to travel from Sunday until September 11 while it establishes a new timetable. Tickets are expected to be released weekly on a rolling basis, starting from the end of this week. Avanti managing director Phil Whittingham wrote in a letter to the rail industry that the ‘current industrial relations climate’ has resulted in ‘severe staff shortages in some grades through increased sickness levels, as well as unofficial … [Read more...] about Rail company cuts timetables and halts ticket sales due to ‘unofficial strike’
The Greater Threat to Airplanes? Birds, Not Drones
Aircraft pilots' rogue drone sightings took off in 2015, according to a report released Wednesday by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a trend the agency is calling "dangerous and illegal." But some argue the threat is being exaggerated, as the number of bird strikes far outnumber drone sightings. So far in 2015, airplane and helicopter pilots have reported seeing 650 drones, while only 238 were spotted the year prior, the agency's report says. While drones are flying hazards, this kind of threat to planes are nothing new. U.S. airline captain Chris Manno wrote that the drone threat is overblown on his blog JetHead . "[W]hile the new hobbyist drones begin to enjoy an increasing level of retail sales, the bird hazard numbers literally in the millions," he wrote. "By sheer numbers alone, bird conflicts and even bird strikes dwarf the number of drone 'sightings' by airliners, but they're simply no longer news." Each year since 1990, the FAA compiles data on the … [Read more...] about The Greater Threat to Airplanes? Birds, Not Drones

Celebrities rebel against Instagram boss as he tries to match TikTok
Among the photo captions of his 500-year-old house in Lindos, Rhodes, Jasper Conran had some advice for Instagram’s chief executive. With its ornate door knocker and mosaic floors, the house has remained in its original form for five centuries, Conran wrote. The British fashion designer had captured this stillness in photographs, for years the defining feature of Instagram that made it popular with celebrities and brought in billions of dollars in advertising revenue. But Conran expressed a growing frustration over a redesign that millions of users feel is being forced upon them by the social media app. “Please don’t let us down in the frankly callous way that you appear to be doing. Make Instagram Instagram again; either that or create a parallel platform that doesn’t wipe out the existing one,” he wrote to Adam Mosseri, Instagram chief at Meta. He warned the app threatened to “kill off the skill and hard work that so many millions” have put into photographs. Instagram is … [Read more...] about Celebrities rebel against Instagram boss as he tries to match TikTok
WhatsApp mirrors Snapchat with new screenshot-blocking feature
WhatsApp is bringing in a new screenshot-blocking feature that resembles SnapChat to tempt privacy-conscious users back to the service as parent company Meta struggles with shrinking sales. The changes include the ability to block screenshots of time-limited messages, hiding one’s online presence from other WhatsApp users and leaving group chats without notifying others. WhatsApp owner Meta’s chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said: “We'll keep building new ways to protect your messages and keep them as private and secure as face-to-face conversations.” The ability to block screenshots mirrors one of the main functions of SnapChat, which alerts the sender of a time-limited photo if it is screenshotted before it self-deletes. Joseph Teasdale, head of tech at Enders Analysis, said the changes were “fairly minor product updates designed to keep WhatsApp competitive”. He added: “Mark Zuckerberg seems to be trying to return to the founder-led tech startup model of placing huge, bold … [Read more...] about WhatsApp mirrors Snapchat with new screenshot-blocking feature
