KidZania: the theme park where kids play at being adults

· January 11, 2015 ·

Suzanne Moore visits Istanbul’s KidZania “You don’t expect me to enjoy this, do you?” she says. “Yes, I bloody well do. That’s why we have come here.” I am standing outside a shopping mall on the outskirts of Istanbul trying to gee up my 13-year-old daughter. We are about to go to KidZania, a new kind of theme park for children from four to 14. We have been flown out to Turkey and driven over the Bosphorous to see the reality of a city built for children. Soon another KidZania will open at the Westfield shopping mall in London. There has been much burble about this innovative kind of children’s entertainment. It’s a theme park with no rides, where you learn stuff. Or as the bumph says: “KidZania London will be the UK’s first educational entertainment experience, offering kids the opportunity to learn over 60 unique and exciting professions – turning dreams into reality.” Dreams versus reality. All kids dream … [Read more...] about KidZania: the theme park where kids play at being adults

How to end the UK’s gender pay gap

· June 12, 2016 ·

More than three decades after the equal pay act, the gender pay gap still stands at about 19%, with the average British woman earning around 80p for every £1 earned by a man. David Cameron believes he has a few ways to narrow the gulf and has vowed to eliminate it “in a generation”. But for many people that is clearly too long to wait. There is little that employees can do for themselves to secure equal pay overnight, but what is there to stop their employers simply wiping out any disparity at their firms in one fell swoop? Nothing, it turns out. New government rules are coming in that will force bigger employers to publish their pay gap. The idea is to name and shame the worst offenders, but there are no legal requirements for employers to actually close the gap. But here’s a simple idea: an organisation that finds there is a pay gap between its male and female employees could just raise women’s pay. That is exactly what one London start-up has done. … [Read more...] about How to end the UK’s gender pay gap

SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: Letters by Sir Sean Connery that reveal his very first love

· February 8, 2021 ·

Sir Sean Connery 's heart never really left his native Scotland — and, in particular, Edinburgh, the city of his birth and of his life before Bond and stardom. And now a hitherto unseen collection of private letters is being auctioned which will leave his admirers shaken, if not stirred, as they reveal how much Auld Reekie meant to the actor, who died last year aged 90. The correspondence, which comes up for sale in two weeks' time, is with one of Connery's oldest friends whom he had known for 80 years. 'They were childhood friends who grew up together in Edinburgh,' Cathy Marsden, of auctioneers Lyon & Turnbull, tells me. Sir Sean Connery's heart never really left his native Scotland — and, in particular, Edinburgh, the city of his birth and of his life before Bond and stardom.
