Former students have shared their favourite memories of a popular teacher who has retired today after 43 years at a Derby school. During his long career at West Park in Spondon, Jim Stringer worked as an English teacher and then as a cover supervisor. Several former pupils left comments on the story published by Derbyshire Live last week about Mr Stringer, which included a tribute from his wife June, who he met while working at the school. The 70-year-old, who was born in Church Hill, Spondon in 1949, taught thousands of pupils over the years, including three generations of some families. Many of his former students loved his sense of humour. Beth Bryant said: "He was always, always so lovely to me and my friends, and amazing at cracking proper dad jokes. A postcard written by celebrated English writer and poet D H Lawrence to an Eakring woman more than 100 years ago almost ended up in a rubbish skip.It was thought to have been lost years ago, but when relieved owner Mrs Patricia Endean-Rowe, a retired teacher, was clearing out her late mother's bungalow with relatives, it was discovered by accident when a plastic box was about to be thrown into a skip at Bilsthorpe tip four years ago.She said: “Our family always knew about the card but thought it’d been lost years ago. My late mother, Ella Walker, couldn’t remember where she’d put it.“After she passed away, we had to clear her bungalow. A relative was about to throw a plastic box away but, just before he did, gave it a shake – and realised something was inside. Pupils from Stowmarket High School were joined by a very special guest last Tuesday.Stuart Lawrence, delivered an assembly to Year 7 and 8 pupils and a workshop and talk to Year 10, 12 and 13 students.Mr Lawrence spoke about his brother, Stephen Lawrence, who was murdered when he was 18-years-old in London in 1993.Katy Farrow, assistant headteacher, said: "The idea of the assembly was to try to get the students to think about living their best life and encourage the students to have a four year plan and Stuart said he would return to the school in four years time to see if they'd reached their goals."Mr Lawrence who is a former graphics teacher now visits schools talking to students about tragedy and the Stephen Lawrence Trust.Marina Dickings, A-level sociology teacher at the school, said: “The older students could understand how important it was and were able to be up front about racism. Ayr United striker Lawrence Shankland has confirmed he is leaving the club. The prolific forward has bagged 34 goals for the Honest Men this season in an attempt to get them promoted to the Scottish top flight. Ayr lost out to Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the play-offs, but Shankland was on the move regardless of whether promotion was secured. A host of clubs are chasing him, including Swansea City, Celtic, Rangers and Sunderland.
