In London, Labour’s takeover by the hard Left is under way. In Haringey, the moderate council leader, Claire Kober, has been forced out. In Newham, Sir Robin Wales, the respected mayor, has been deselected. In Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark, battles rage between moderates and Momentum, the Left-wing campaign group. Councillors are being turfed out, and bullying, sexism, and anti-Semitism are rife. Nobody expects Jeremy Corbyn to intervene, but where in all this is the Mayor of London? Sadiq Khan is the most powerful elected Labour politician in Britain. He is uniquely placed to confront the hard Left head on. Yet – facing reselection by the London Labour Party this summer – he refuses to do so. This week, as Momentum picketed Labour HQ, calling for a purge of moderate staffers, an interview with the mayor appeared in London’s Evening Standard . Asked about the hard Left, all he could say was: “I thrive on engaging with new members, including those from Momentum.” This is … [Read more...] about Mayor of London Sadiq Khan is failing the entire country through his political cowardice

Sadiq Khan’s cannabis drive represents all that is wrong with the Labour Party
Most people seem to have missed the biggest political story of the last couple of days: that Sadiq Khan has given up any ambition to become prime minister. Of course, this is more implicit than explicit, but his actions and words can hardly be mistaken for anything other than a renunciation of what most of us assumed was his former determination to “do a Boris”. Khan, like Boris Johnson, is one of his generation’s most ambitious politicians. If he genuinely never intended to use City Hall as a stepping stone to the leadership of his own party and then to Downing Street, then I am happy to stand corrected and to apologise for this grave calumny against him. Indeed, I may have been wrong all along, because let’s face it, which politician with a feel for the mood of the nation would imagine that what the country needs at this time of crisis is more recreational drug use ? As the capital’s mayor, Khan has set up a commission to examine the effectiveness of current drug laws, … [Read more...] about Sadiq Khan’s cannabis drive represents all that is wrong with the Labour Party

Russian soldiers ‘intentionally using rape as a weapon of mass destruction’
Troops in Ukraine have been using rape as a weapon to terrorise Ukrainian communities, sexual violence activists have said. Since Vladimir Putin invaded on February 24, multiple reports have come out about his troops allegedly assaulting women , men, the elderly and even children. Experts have now told Metro.co.uk these rapes are not ‘randomised, individual, opportunistic acts’ but part of a Russian ‘strategy of terror to instil fear’ instead. Katrien Coppens is the executive director of the Mukwege Foundation – a group advocating for the rights of victims of sexual violence in conflict. She, along with colleagues from her partner organisation the Global Survivors Fund (GSF), were invited to Ukraine in the last week of April. They spoke to survivors, local authorities and charities on the ground before concluding there is ‘at least a clear indication, if not evidence, that the Russian hierarchy is not only failing to act [on the rape of Ukrainians] but … [Read more...] about Russian soldiers ‘intentionally using rape as a weapon of mass destruction’
Eurovision 2022: Sam Ryder is ‘ignoring the hype’ as the UK’s odds improve
By Mark Savage Published 2 days ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Eurovision Song Contest Something strange is happening at Eurovision: bookmakers are predicting a good result for the UK. After two years of finishing in last place, and more than a decade since we made the top 10, Sam Ryder is second favourite to win with his uplifting power ballad Space Man. But Ryder is trying to ignore the mounting excitement. "I don't want to get to a point where I start believing the hype," he says. "I just want to do everyone proud, and do the best job I possibly can." Former winner Conchita Wurst is more willing to speculate on his chances. "The buzz in the Eurovision community is, 'Oh, the UK is participating again,'" she told the BBC last month. "No offence to all the other artists who have come before... but this year it feels like, … [Read more...] about Eurovision 2022: Sam Ryder is ‘ignoring the hype’ as the UK’s odds improve
