For a few seconds, her face brightened with pleasure, she rejoices in the moment. And why not? It's an evening in January, and Angela Merkel is sitting in a festively illuminated glass building at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, with CNN superstar Christiane Amanpour in front of her. "What can I say about a woman named Angela Merkel?" Amanpour asks the audience. That she's the first female chancellor? Merkel is much more than that, Amanpour continues, a scientist who still believes in the value of facts in this post-factual world; a woman who fights against nationalism and climate change. She describes how the chancellor has set a high standard for how to deal with the desperate people of the world. It's all laid on a bit thick, a mixture of Oscar ceremony and political seminar, but Merkel has a smile on her face. It's only now and then, when the camera zooms in on her, that she puts on a more neutral, chancellor-like face. Despite all that she has achieved, she still has a … [Read more...] about A Dim View of the World: Will Merkel Be Followed by Darkness?

THE all-new Mazda3 has just arrived and there is no doubt it is the best-looking car your money can buy in a busy family hatchback segment. It makes most of its rivals look dull and it easily matches the VW Golf on quality and the talented Ford Focus on driving pleasure. This car will turn heads and the news gets even better as a stunning-looking sedan version will arrive in October, as will a new petrol engine that will deliver more performance with diesel-matching economy. The newcomer from the Japanese marque is right up there with the class leaders as it is fun to drive, has a premium cabin and is quiet and economical. It features the next generation of Mazda’s Koda Soul of Motion design and has been redesigned from the ground up, complete with a new chassis and stacks of safety equipment. Mazda has certainly delivered on its promise to produce a hatchback with a high level of standard equipment but that means that the price of the new range starts at £20,595. However, … [Read more...] about Mazda has the power of 3
I have been in Kyiv this week, meeting the usual suspects but also attending the Concorde Capital “Game of Thrones” – the Ukrainian version – conference on Oct. 16. The highlight for me was a panel of four oligarchs who gave their own very particular spin on things. Surreal to say the least, this seemed like more of a campaign rally at times as TV cameras were deployed and they seemed to be pitching their expertise to certain constituencies, be that the public or the old and new political classes. It was eye-opening nonetheless as to how things have worked up until now in Ukraine. But Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s April 21 election as president of Ukraine suggests the population want something different. There were numerous foreign bank investor types visiting Kyiv this week, and plenty of foreign investors trying to figure out the landscape post-Zelenskiy’s landslide victory Here are my own takeouts: A starting point for me is that Zelenskiy’s win has … [Read more...] about Timothy Ash: The view from Ukraine this week

A Scots nurse has been struck off for putting women at risk from cancer by covering up smear test errors. Karen Boyle affected at least 16 patients at the Strathcalder Practice in East Kilbride after she lied about carrying out the tests. A Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) inquiry focused on 16 women between January 25, 2016 and February 7, last year whose smear tests had been taken but no results had been identified. The hearing found the tests had either not been sent or were labelled incorrectly which led to them not being identifiable. As a result women were at risk of going through the stress of having to endure another smear test or "possible harm in detecting pre-cancerous cells at an earlier date which could have delayed treatment to patients". In one incident a patient attended a postnatal test, but was told to return at the 12-week post-birth date. However, Boyle then recorded that a smear had taken place and clinical details were added. It was also found Boyle, who … [Read more...] about Nurse struck off for putting women at risk from cancer over smear test cover-up
