Co-op store management shake-up to affect 2,000 staff

· April 22, 2021 ·

The Co-op retail chain has announced a shake-up of its store management structure which is expected to affect 2,000 staff. It is axing the role of team manager across most of its stores - though stressed there would be no compulsory redundancies and that all those affected would be offered alternative positions. The changes, which have been trialled over the last couple of years, echo those recently enacted by some of the Co-op's rivals. A spokesperson said: "Our aim at Co-op is to serve and support our communities, giving our customers the best possible shopping experience. "As we move our stores over to a three-tier management structure, protecting jobs is a continuing key priority and we are pleased to be able to offer alternative positions to all the colleagues affected. A Black man has been fatally shot by police in North Carolina as he was served with a search warrant in his car, authorities have said. State officials in Elizabeth City, Pasquotank County, have opened an investigation after Andrew Brown Jr was shot while trying to drive away on Wednesday morning. Deputies fired at him multiple times and his car skidded into a tree, according to a witness. Police have not said whether Mr Brown was armed or whether he was considered a threat to the officers. The nature of the warrant has not been disclosed. Demetria Williams, who lives on the same street, said: "When they opened the door he was already dead. He was slumped over." Coronavirus digest: India records world’s highest daily rise in infections

· January 22, 2021 ·

Authorities in India recorded the world's highest daily tally of 314,835 infections on Thursday, as a new wave of the pandemic spreads faster than ever across the country, threatening access to medical supplies and an ailing health system. Health officials in the north and the west of the country said they were going through a crisis, with most hospitals full and running out of essential supplies. India has reported nearly 16 million infections since the start of the pandemic, with the death toll nearing 185,000. Doctors in some areas were advising patients to stay at home. A crematorium in the eastern city of Muzaffarpur said it was being overwhelmed with bodies and grieving families had to wait their turn. "Right now there are no beds, no oxygen. Everything else is secondary," Shahid Jameel, a virologist and director of the Trivedi School of Biosciences at Ashoka University, told Reuters. "The infrastructure is crumbling." The previous record one-day rise in cases was … [Read more...] about Coronavirus digest: India records world’s highest daily rise in infections

COVID-19: Pizza Express moves to hire 1,000 staff (after cutting 2,400 jobs last year)

· April 22, 2021 ·

Pizza Express has said it is to recruit 1,000 new workers as its reopening gathers pace following a year of coronavirus disruption that forced it to permanently close dozens of restaurants. The casual dining chain, which cut 2,400 jobs last year, has already reopened 118 sites in line with the easing of COVID-19 lockdown measures that allow outdoor seating. It said those restaurants had been "busy" and 24 more would open for al-fresco dining next week in England. Retail jobs endure worst hit from COVID crisis Pizza Express said it was hiring in anticipation of restrictions on trade being removed completely in June, allowing meals to be eaten inside. It added that 300 of the new roles would be created under the government's Kickstart initiative to help young people find work. Advertisement Managing director Zoe Bowley said: "We're expecting millions of people to flock back to restaurants as restrictions are eased, so we are delighted … [Read more...] about COVID-19: Pizza Express moves to hire 1,000 staff (after cutting 2,400 jobs last year)

Climate change: Net-zero cannot be achieved by planting a few trees or keeping lights switched off a bit more

· April 22, 2021 ·

How much of the world's emissions are down to aviation? How much of the greenhouse gases being pumped into the atmosphere are coming from our homes, whether in the form of the electricity we use or the gas that goes in our boilers? What about deforestation, or agriculture, or manufacturing? These questions are worth pondering because it turns out the answers are actually rather surprising. Follow live updates from Joe Biden's climate change summit Advertisement Indeed, there is a serious disconnect between the stuff you often see depicted on screens and in newspapers to symbolise the environmental movement, and what the data actually tells you about the realities of carbon emissions. Did you know, for instance, that we create far, far more greenhouse gas emissions through the manufacture of cement than the entire total emissions from the aviation industry? More from Daily Climate Show Joe Biden commits to slashing US greenhouse gas emissions … [Read more...] about Climate change: Net-zero cannot be achieved by planting a few trees or keeping lights switched off a bit more
