Russian forces occupying Mariupol are driving vans around the devastated city screening propaganda. The Kremlin's Federal Emergency Management Agency sent three "mobile complexes for informing the population" to Mariupol to blast Russian propaganda at residents in the city, which has seen some of the worst shelling of the Ukraine war, which began on February 24. Russia's state-run news agency TASS released a video showing vans with large screens mounted on their sides broadcasting clips of Russian television and instructions for Mariupol residents. "Three mobile complexes for informing the population are deployed in Mariupol," reported TASS. "They broadcast news from federal and republican TV channels, provide background information to residents and show cartoons to children." Days earlier, the Mariupol City Council said on Telegram that Russian forces had deployed a network of mobile TV screens showing Russian propaganda. The city council said: "This could be enough for … [Read more...] about Russia drives vans screening propaganda around occupied Mariupol

Will Ukraine invade Russia after pushing Putin’s forces back?
Ukraine's military released an unverified video last week of its troops by a border post marked in their flag's colors of yellow and blue. Intended as a boast at how far Ukraine's counteroffensive had pushed Russian troops back from the second city of Kharkiv, the celebrating soldiers purportedly had enemy territory almost underneath their boots. But just how likely is it that troops like these could push further and enter Russia? While there are no indications Ukraine is looking to send soldiers into its neighbor, the war has taken some unexpected turns. In the eastern Donbass region, where fighting is concentrated after Russia's withdrawal from Kyiv, Russian cities are tantalizingly close for Ukraine's troops to embarrass Moscow. Russia claimed that Ukrainian helicopters struck a fuel depot in Belgorod just over the border last month, which Kyiv has denied. But unexplained explosions at infrastructure sites on the other side of the frontier point to the importance for Ukraine … [Read more...] about Will Ukraine invade Russia after pushing Putin’s forces back?

Ex-Liverpool star Andriy Voronin unrecognisable in charity clash after fleeing Russia
Former Liverpool striker Andriy Voronin had been working as an assistant at Dynamo Moscow when he was forced to flee Russia following their invasion of Ukraine - and fans were delighted to see him back in action at Old Trafford last weekend. The 42-year-old made 40 appearances for the club across two seasons following a move from Bayer Leverkusen, and was picked to feature in their legends clash against Manchester United on Saturday. Voronin has got rid of his flowing blonde locks in recent years for a cropped brunette style, and was on the winning team alongside the likes of Dirk Kurt and Jamie Carragher with a 3-1 triumph. Voronin was back in the news earlier this year after he had to quit his job as assistant manager at Dynamo Moscow after Russia invaded his native Ukraine. The former Fortuna Dusseldorf man played 75 times for his country scoring eight goals between 2002 and 2012, having been born in Ukraine's third most populous city, Odessa. Zelensky on baby killed in Odessa strikes: “How did she threaten Russia?”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky questioned how a three-month-old baby could "threaten Russia" after a Russian missile strike killed the infant child and at least seven others Saturday. Zelensky said the attack targeted the southern Ukrainian city of Odessa, via aircraft from the Caspian Sea. So far, at least 18 people have been reported to be wounded. "Ordinary peaceful people. Among those killed was a 3-month-old baby girl. How did she threaten Russia? It seems that killing children is just a new national idea of the Russian Federation," Zelensky said in a message to the nation. "We will identify all those responsible for this strike...No one will be able to hide. No matter how long it takes us, all these bastards will be responsible for every death they caused." Sergei Nazarov, an aide to Odessa's mayor, said the missiles struck a residential neighborhood in the far west of the city, The New York Times reported. Images and videos shared on social media appeared to … [Read more...] about Zelensky on baby killed in Odessa strikes: “How did she threaten Russia?”

Biden warns Putin of ‘swift and severe costs’ as Russia plans to ‘invade Ukraine on WEDNESDAY’ and Brits told leave now
JOE Biden warned Vladimir Putin of "swift and severe costs" tonight after claims Russia is planning to invade Ukraine within days. But bloody conflict still looms after a crunch phone call between the two presidents ended in deadlock with 130,000 troops on the border. The leaders talked for one hour and two minutes - but made no real progress amid intelligence reports that Putin will trigger a bomb blitz and ground invasion on Wednesday. Afterwards the White House said: "President Biden was clear that, if Russia undertakes a further invasion of Ukraine, the United States together with our allies and partners will respond decisively and impose swift and severe costs on Russia. "President Biden reiterated that a further Russian invasion of Ukraine would produce widespread human suffering and diminish Russia's standing." Leaving the door open to further talks, the US leader said he was prepared to engage in diplomacy while being "equally prepared for other scenarios". … [Read more...] about Biden warns Putin of ‘swift and severe costs’ as Russia plans to ‘invade Ukraine on WEDNESDAY’ and Brits told leave now
Russia ‘set to invade Ukraine in days with US Embassy ready to evacuate’ as Biden holds crisis talks with Putin TODAY
THE US embassy in Kiev is ready to evacuate over fears Russia may invade Ukraine by Wednesday as tensions reach boiling point, reports say. American diplomats will reportedly be urged to leave Kiev as soon as possible due to the looming threat, while Joe Biden prepares for a crisis call with Vladimir Putin at 11am on Saturday. The US State Department is expected to announce on Saturday that American staff at the Kiev embassy will be required to leave the country. Emergency diplomatic efforts are underway with Biden expected to discuss the crisis with Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone on Saturday. ‘Starving Brits will soon turn into cannibals’, Russia claims after Jeremy Clarkson joke
Barmy Russian telly chiefs say starving Brits will soon turn to cannibalism – but their outlandish claim is only based on a Jeremy Clarkson gag. Propaganda channel TsargradTV said UK food supplies had been so badly hit by Western sanctions in the Ukraine invasion, Brits would have to start eating each other. The bizarre claim – on a channel owned by a Vladimir Putin supporter – quoted presenter Jeremy, 62, joking earlier this month it would be only a matter of time before “people eat their neighbours”. TsargradTV claimed: “Things are not going well in the UK. "Journalists begin to say terrible things aloud, reminding them of the risk of cannibalism.” But the Clarkson’s Farm host had been kidding when he wrote: “While people can live without heat or clothing or even sex, they cannot live without food. Hunger makes people eat their neighbours.” The strange claim is the latest in a series of bizarre statements made by ever-more-desperate propaganda chiefs in Russia . … [Read more...] about ‘Starving Brits will soon turn into cannibals’, Russia claims after Jeremy Clarkson joke
Expert interview: What Russia did in Syria may predict what happens next in Ukraine
First Syria and Chechnya, and now Ukraine — experts have already drawn many parallels between the Russian approach to conflicts in those areas. Hanna Notte, a senior research associate with the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, focuses on security issues and arms control with a particular emphasis on where those intersect when it comes to Russia and the Middle East. DW spoke to Notte about parallels she has observed in conflicts in Syria and now in Ukraine, and how that may help predict what happens next in Ukraine. DW: You have identified parallels between the military campaign that Russia conducted in Syria and what it is doing n Ukraine. What are these? Hanna Notte: The five parallels that I identified are starting with the idea of Russia engaging in sequential warfare, or war in phases. Secondly, its tactic of encircling cities, conducting sieges and bombardments, but then also establishing, and I quote, "humanitarian corridors." These, I think, … [Read more...] about Expert interview: What Russia did in Syria may predict what happens next in Ukraine
