Microsoft’s records of Mariupol attacks will be used at future ‘Nuremberg trials’
Records of Ukrainian hospital bombings automatically recorded by Microsoft will be used at future 'Nuremberg trials' of Russian war criminals , the company's president has said. The time and date of attacks are being logged by artificial intelligence tools using live satellite images of occupied Ukraine and the evidence will be made available to prosecutors. Massacres at locations such as Mariupol’s maternity hospital, destroyed by Russian air strikes in early March, can be captured by commercial satellites and analysed to determine who was responsible. In a speech in London, Microsoft president Brad Smith said: "It's important to ensure that we create the foundation to do what was done after World War Two, at a place like Nuremberg. “That's why we're providing the technology platform free of charge for the prosecutor for the UN and the International Criminal Court.” A captured Russian soldier has already pleaded guilty to murder and war crimes in a Ukrainian court … [Read more...] about Microsoft’s records of Mariupol attacks will be used at future ‘Nuremberg trials’
Deadly gas leak from Mariupol steelworks could lead to ‘environmental catastrophe’
Tens of thousands of gallons of toxic chemicals released from the Azovstal plant could lead to an ‘environmental catastrophe’ not just in Ukraine , but in the entire Black and Mediterranean Seas too. Russia has been shelling the sprawling plant in Mariupol for weeks after it became the last holdout of resistance in the occupied port city . In a message on the Telegram messaging app yesterday, officials issued a grave warning about the ‘complete extinction of the Sea of Azov’ if the destruction results in a leak of concentrated hydrogen sulfide – also known as swamp gas. ‘The Azovstal bombing could damage a technical facility that holds back tens of thousands of tons of concentrated hydrogen sulfide solution,’ the statement read. ‘Leakage of this fluid will completely kill the flora and fauna of the Sea of Azov. ‘Then dangerous substances can get into the Black and Mediterranean Seas.’ Along with dangers to the environment, severe inhalation of high … [Read more...] about Deadly gas leak from Mariupol steelworks could lead to ‘environmental catastrophe’

Inflation hits 40-year high amid worsening cost of living crisis
Inflation has shot up to its highest level in 40 years as soaring energy bills put millions of households under pressure. The rate rose to 9% in the year to April, up from an already high 7% in March, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said. It was the fastest measured rate since records began in 1989, and the ONS estimates it was the highest since 1982. But experts have warned that the poorest households are bearing the brunt of rising prices, with analysis by economic think tanks estimating they face a rate closer to 11%. Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) analysis indicated the bottom 10% of the population in terms of income faced an inflation rate of 10.9%, while for the richest 10% it was 7.9%, a full three percentage points lower. The Resolution Foundation (RF), which focuses on living standards, estimated that the poorest households faced a rate of 10.2%. The difference is largely due to soaring energy bills, with the price cap increasing by £693 for … [Read more...] about Inflation hits 40-year high amid worsening cost of living crisis
Sainsbury’s commits to remove Russian diesel from petrol stations
Sainsbury’s has pledged to stop selling Russian diesel from its petrol stations by the end of the year after calls from its customers. The supermarket group confirmed the commitment on Thursday to halt such sales across its 315 petrol forecourts in line with the UK’s action against Russian oil imports. It added that it had been working closely with its suppliers to reduce the amount of diesel it sources from Russia but now plans to end its use entirely. It comes amid pressure on retailers and energy firms to shake off their reliance on Russia for certain products after the country launched an assault on Ukraine in February. How the Bank of England’s money printing spree paved the way for inflation crisis
Printing money to prop up economies is not, traditionally speaking, considered to be good practice. Cranking up the printing presses evokes images of Weimar Germany or Zimbabwe under Robert Mugabe: denominations with an absurd row of zeros at the end, or those terrifying images of wheelbarrow loads of cash being transported for use as kindling. Some trepidation, then, greeted the announcement in the financial crisis of quantitative easing - in the UK’s case under Mervyn King, the Bank’s Governor at the time. This type of digital money creation was an innovation to combat the worst recession for decades, and led to some forecasts of a huge wave of inflation. The Bank argued it is nothing like simply printing and spending money - QE is used to buy bonds in financial markets, not to fund spending directly. It can also be removed from circulation later, as is happening now. In the event, hyperinflation did not follow and most advanced economies spent the following decade trying … [Read more...] about How the Bank of England’s money printing spree paved the way for inflation crisis
