· February 9, 2021 ·

Diana Brittan had a busy day planned for Thursday, March 5, 2015. First she would answer some of the hundreds of condolence cards she had received following the death just six weeks earlier of her husband Leon, Lord Brittan of Spennithorne. Political heavyweights had sent heartfelt sympathy cards paying tribute to her husband's character and achievements – in the early 1980s he was the youngest home secretary since Churchill and became an eminent EU commissioner. The well-wishers included the then prime minister David Cameron , Boris Johnson , Gordon Brown, Nick Clegg and William Hague, to name but a few. Lady Brittan was then due to have lunch with former Tory MPs Norman Fowler [now the Lord Speaker] and the late Lord Temple-Morris, before going to the cinema that evening with two girlfriends. Guy Hamilton obituary

· April 21, 2016 ·

With four James Bond movies – Goldfinger (1964), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), Live and Let Die (1973) and The Man With the Golden Gun (1974) – among his credits, the director Guy Hamilton, who has died aged 93, was one of Britain’s most bankable film-makers. But his latter-day fame, for these and other commercial blockbusters, detracted in the eyes of many critics from his earlier achievements. Hamilton’s long career began as an assistant director, a job that most usually led to work in production. He, however, was determined to direct and decided that “the trick was not to be an assistant director, but to become the director’s assistant”, thus gaining valuable experience by tackling those tasks that preoccupied bosses chose to delegate. During a six-year period he became recognised as the best in the business, working for Alberto Cavalcanti , Sidney Gilliat , John Huston , Anthony Kimmins and, most significantly, Carol Reed. Following that valuable apprenticeship, his own … [Read more...] about Guy Hamilton obituary

· March 15, 2018 ·

Brits were tricked into sending £236 million to fraudsters in push payment scams last year But what are authorised push payment scams and how can you stay protected from them? There were 43,875 reported cases of authorised push payment scams last year. In most of these cases the victim lost around £3,000 pounds to fraudsters. So knowing how to protect yourself from authorised payment scams is vital. Unlike a regular scam where a fraudster takes money from the bank account of a victim without them knowing, an authorised payment scam involves the fraudster tricking the customer into thinking that they are from a legitimate source so that the customer hands over the money willingly. One of the most common forms of this scam is when a fraudster rings up pretending to be from your bank … [Read more...] about Fraudsters tricked victims into transferring £236million from bank accounts last year – here’s how to protect yourself
