A new under water camera system that aims to boost safety in swimming pools has been defended by leisure chiefs after a parent claimed it was an “invasion of privacy”. Poolview is a camera system which records videos under and above water in swimming pools - helping to reduce risks by giving lifeguards a better view of what’s going on. The company works with Everyone Active, which runs seven pools across Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland. It says all data from the system is subject to strict data-protection laws and footage and images are stored securely and deleted after five days unless an incident requires them to be kept for longer. The system is already operating at the Redcar & Cleveland Leisure and Community Heart and Loftus Leisure Centre and will be introduced at the five other sites.. But parent, Jenny Archer, whose daughter uses the Redcar leisure centre, believes Poolview is a ploy to cut staff and increase profits, as well as invading the … [Read more...] about Underwater cameras at swimming pool criticised over privacy

With warnings that nearly four billion litres of water are wasted though paddling pool use during hot weekends, environmentally-conscious parents may be tempted to reuse the same water over the course of several days. But Ralph Riley, vice chair of the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group and Dr Lisa Ackerley, a chartered environmental health practitioner, both advise parents to use fresh water in your paddling pool every day you have it out, to reduce the risk of a child picking up an infection. If you’re concerned about saving water, the best thing to do is save paddling pools for a special treat. Unlike professionally-run swimming pools, which have filter systems and are treated with a chlorine-based disinfectant treatment, the majority of at-home paddling pools will be filled with water from the mains. Although this water does have a certain amount of disinfectant in it, due to the fact household water is centrally treated to make it safe, this small amount … [Read more...] about How Often Should You Change Paddling Pool Water To Keep It Hygienic?

WORLD CUP winner, Premier League failure, now a swimming pool salesman. Life has been anything but conventional for Stephane Guivarc'h, now 47, who is often thought of as somewhat of a joke figure, and is now back in the news following comparisons with goal-shy Olivier Giroud. But today Guivarc'h is having the last laugh, running Tanguy Pools with a childhood friend in the small village of Concarneau in Brittany, France and living a tranquil life. The former Newcastle United player, once a £3.6m signing from Auxerre, was flogged within months of his Premier League arrival to Glasgow Rangers after just four games for the Toon. In the twilight years of his career, Guivarc'h spent a season at Guingamp, a small club he began his career at, to be close to his dying mother. He retired in 2002, then a few years later a close friend came to him with a dilemma. "It happened quite naturally,” Guivarc’h told The Times. 'TOTAL SPANNER' Fans slam Roy Keane as he sticks the boot … [Read more...] about Stephane Guivarc’h: France World Cup winner and Newcastle United flop quit football to sell swimming pools
South West Water has urged the Westcountry to cut down on its water usage, as the region sizzles in a heatwave. The endless sunshine has already seen Monday become the hottest day of the year so far, and forecasters say it could get hotter and hotter until Saturday. As a result, SWW is 'monitering the situation closely' and has told people to ditch paddling pools and head to the sea, swap hose pipes for watering cans, avoid baths and cut shower time. Not only will it save on cash, it conserves the vital water supplies under immense strain as the sun continues to beat down. The large reservoir north of Plymouth, Burrator, built to supply the city with drinking water was just 50 per cent full yesterday afternoon in order to refresh those who live in the sprawling city. What South West Water advises: Keep a jug of water in the fridge instead of wasting water by running your tap cold Shower instead of bath Only use your dishwasher and / or washing machine when you have a full load Turn … [Read more...] about South West Water: DITCH paddling pools and hosepipes
