Unprecedented rule change will block dangerous prisoners from automatic release
Dangerous prisoners will be blocked from automatic release by ministers under new powers to protect the public. Ministers have taken unprecedented powers to force criminals to serve jail terms beyond their normal release date if they are judged to pose a “significant risk of serious harm” to the public. The rule change will allow ministers to override judges’ “fixed term sentences”, which set automatic release dates at halfway or two-thirds through offenders’ jail terms. They will instead be able to refer them to the parole board to require them to serve out their full prison sentences before they are released into the community. It had originally been thought that the power would only apply to criminals who were radicalised in jail and therefore became a terrorist threat if freed. But Ministry of Justice (MoJ) guidance, seen by The Telegraph, lists more than 180 types of crime that can justify extended detention if the prisoner is thought to pose a risk of committing them … [Read more...] about Unprecedented rule change will block dangerous prisoners from automatic release
How Chelsea can spend £230m and splash out huge wages but NOT break any Financial Fair Play rules due to Covid-19
THE dire warnings of a financial crisis seem a million miles away from the Premier League reality. When Chelsea are spending in a manner reminiscent of the early days of Roman Abramovich and Manchester City were ready to pay Lionel Messi whatever he wanted, talk of doom, gloom and a game on the verge of the abyss seems contradictory. But Juventus president Andrea Agnelli, chairman of the influential European Club Association, does not see a disconnect between his words and the landscape across the continent. Indeed, from Agnelli’s perspective, it is simple - the exceptions PROVE the rule. The Italian is measured, calm and compelling. You have to be when you inherit the legacy of The Old Lady. TRANSFER NEWS LIVE: Breaking news, juicy gossip and the biggest deals So for Agnelli, the Prem big spenders represent an expected but small proportion of the greater European market. A market which does face the biggest belt-tightening exercise in football history … [Read more...] about How Chelsea can spend £230m and splash out huge wages but NOT break any Financial Fair Play rules due to Covid-19
Archie Battersbee: Family win right to appeal against ruling that son is brain dead
The parents of a 12-year-old boy ruled as brain dead have been granted the right to appeal. Doctors treating Archie Battersbee at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, east London, thought he was "brain-stem dead" after a freak incident at his home. In the High Court family division, Mrs Justice Arbuthnot ruled last week that the boy died "at noon on May 31 2022" based on MRI scans and gave Barts Health NHS Trust permission to disconnect him from a ventilator. It was thought to be the first time someone was declared "likely" to be dead based on an MRI scan, which the court heard is not as reliable as the usual brain stem test. But lawyers for Archie's parents, Hollie Dance and Paul Battersbee, pointed out that their son’s heart was still beating. At a follow-up High Court hearing on Monday, the judge granted Ms Dance and Mr Battersbee permission to mount a bid to overturn the ruling at the Court of Appeal. A barrister leading the family’s legal team argued that … [Read more...] about Archie Battersbee: Family win right to appeal against ruling that son is brain dead
Afghanistan: Inside beauty salon as country lives under strict Taliban rule
We drove along Butchers Street in Kabul, as the stripped carcasses of lamb and goat hung on meat hooks swaying in the wind, where gaggles of men argued over prices, and butchers boys heaved the meat onto their backs and delivered them to waiting trucks. At the end of the street, an intersection marked the end of the meat market and the start of a series of colourfully painted buildings. The names of the beauty shops somewhat gave the game away. We pulled over and it was agreed that Sky producer, Dominique van Heerden, would go over and have a peek inside. We had agreed with the owner of one of the salons that Sky News could come and film and interview her, but we were early. The caveat was that only Dominique could go inside. The Taliban have decreed that no men, under any circumstances, can ever go inside the parlours. More on Afghanistan Father who served with British Army in Afghanistan has spent a year hiding from Taliban - and still no sign of … [Read more...] about Afghanistan: Inside beauty salon as country lives under strict Taliban rule
‘I murdered Lachlan Gebhardt’: How a confession to murder was ruled inadmissible
ALDEN WILLIAMS/STUFF Joe Bradley and Kelly Phillips were among the first on the scene of the 2019 crash that killed 6-year-old Lachlan Gebhardt. This video was filmed a year after the crash. After a fiery crash that killed his 6-year-old son, Niklas Gebhardt confessed to murdering him. SAM SHERWOOD reports on why this confession was kept under wraps. On October 30, 2020, almost a year after Niklas Gebhardt survived a fiery crash that killed his 6-year-old son, he was on his push-bike with one thing in mind. To confess. On November 5, 2019, he had driven north out of Rangiora and onto long flat Lehmans Rd. His son Lachlan was in the back seat of the car. Gebhardt began to speed up and dangerously overtook another car. The manoeuvre required him to swerve sharply back into his lane to avoid colliding with an oncoming car. Sanna Marin: Finland PM partying video causes backlash
By Merlyn Thomas Published 7 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The Finnish Prime Minister, Sanna Marin, is facing a backlash after being seen partying in a leaked video.
