A showcase of the best rugby league in the world has taken one step closer to coming to Teesside. The region’s bid to host part of the Rugby League World Cup in 2021 has now reached “candidate stage” - meaning the Northern Echo Arena, the Riverside Stadium and Rockliffe Hall will be scrutinised by the tournament’s organisers to see if they’re up to scratch to host top international sides. An official application was launched by the Tees Valley Combined Authority, Middlesbrough Council, Middlesbrough FC, Darlington Council and Mowden Park RFC last month. A request to host rugby league powerhouses Australia and bring the men’s semi final to the Riverside Stadium are key parts of the bid. The Rugby League Challenge Cup sixth round draw has been made and it's fair to say both Hull FC and Hull KR have shared different fortunes. Hull FC will travel to Featherstone Rovers as they begin their defence of the trophy after winning the competition in both of the last two seasons, with the tie a repeat of an infamous 1983 final when the Black and Whites went down to a shock 14-12 defeat to Featherstone. Hull KR are set to host Wigan Warriors in what is a mouth-watering but tough tie for the Robins. Elsewhere, Castleford Tigers face St Helens at home in a crunch fixture, while Warrington Wolves will host Toronto Wolfpack despite being drawn away, with the Canadian side not able to play in Toronto in the Challenge Cup.
