An Akita dog left for dead in a woodland had been beaten so badly vets thought he'd been hit by a car. The dog, named Alfie, was blinded and left with a fractured skull, broken jaw and a spinal injury following the horrific attack in Wigan in March . But RSPCA staff have spent a long time nursing him back to health and say he's now 'doing amazingly well in his new home', the Liverpool Echo reports. Paul Gibson, branch manager said: “Alfie the Akita was found in an awful way; left for dead in the woodland area of Wigan after being given a severe beating. “So severe he was unable to stand, his face was so swollen we could not see his eyes and vets were unsure whether he had been hit by a car at first. “He also was emaciated and appeared to have what looked like large burns all over his back. “He really was in a sorry state when he came to us and we were a little worried about how he would react to us, after being so betrayed by humans. “However, Alfie … [Read more...] about A dog was beaten and left for dead in a wood

A man has been banned from owning pets for life after he let three pets starve at his home. The emaciated bodies of a cat and a dog were found at Scott Andrew Buik's home after RSPCA inspectors visited him, a court heard. The pets were so desperate for food that they were found with bits of plastic and metal in their system. The 27-year-old, from Rochdale, was exposed after he took his Staffordshire bull terrier, called Buster, to a vet on November 12, 2018. Buik, of Mellor Street, told the vet that Buster had become unwell that morning. But after examining him, the vet concluded Buster had been starved - he weighed just 11kg. A healthy Staffordshire bull terrier should be twice this weight, the court heard. Buster's condition was so bad that his bones were protruding. The vet decided the kindest thing to do would be to put Buster to sleep. RSPCA inspectors Natalie Taylor and Nina Small went to Buik's home that afternoon. There they found the shocking bodies of the cat and dog, which … [Read more...] about Man let three pets starve to death at his home
A dog which was found battered, blinded and fighting for life is responding well to treament, says the RSPCA. Peter, the Akita, was rescued by the charity and given emergency treatment when he was found collapsed in Wigan woodland last week. On Thursday, March 22, inspectors were called to Kent Street in Scholes after a member of the public found the seriously injured animal in a small clearing. Insp Helen Smith rushed the fawn-coloured Akita to the charity’s Greater Manchester Animal Hospital. At the time she said: “He was very skinny, you could see his ribs. “His breathing was also shallow and his coat was matted. ““The poor dog had pus coming from his eyes and was scratching at his face so was clearly in some discomfort.““The caller reported that he kept trying to stand up but would collapse back onto the ground.“Initially we believed he was blinded in both eyes and couldn’t open his eyes due to a nasty infection.”Since … [Read more...] about Blinded Akita left fighting for life with serious head and spine injuries is on the mend

RSPCA officers who found an emaciated dog in woodland say the animal could have been blinded on purpose. The ‘extremely underweight’ Akita was found with pus coming from his eyes, a matted coat and sores all over his body. Officers who rescued the dog - nicknamed Peter - initially believed that he couldn’t open his eyes because of an infection. However vets now think the animal may have suffered a ‘blunt trauma to the head’, either due to a deliberate attack or a road traffic collision. They are now keen to speak to Peter’s owner in the hope of finding out how he came to collapse in woodland off Kent Street, in Wigan, on Thursday afternoon. Inspector Helen Smith, who found the dog after a call from a member of the public, said: “They said he’d been staggering around but was now laid in the same spot and was extremely underweight. “The poor dog had pus coming from his eyes and was scratching at his face so was clearly in some … [Read more...] about Emaciated dog found collapsed in woodland could have been blinded on purpose
