Warning as mysterious STI strikes up to 1 in 16 women often with no warning signs

June 21, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk

EXPERTS are warning women of a stealthy STI that is often missed, but strikes one in 16 in some parts of the country. Trichomoniasis is more common than the well-known STI gonorrhoea, experts found. But not only is is relatively unheard of, it is not always included in standard STI “check ups” at sexual health clinics or at-home kits. The NHS says to see a GP or sexual health clinic if you have symptoms of the illness, with both men and women affected. New research suggests that many women are carrying trichomoniasis without realising - up to one in 16 women in some areas. The Last Stand: Gatekeepers v ‘self-entitled’ walkers where nearly half kauri at risk

July 3, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz

JASON DORDAY/STUFF Auckland Council kauri dieback biosecurity manager Lisa Tolich explains why her council has been so proactive in protecting kauri. Kauri are some of New Zealand’s most important taonga – both ecologically and culturally. But the trees are being killed by incurable kauri dieback disease – caused by a pathogen called Phytophthora agathidicida – and the fight to save them has been slow and convoluted. Stuff senior journalist Denise Piper and visual journalist Jason Dorday investigate what is happening to save kauri while they still stand. In the fight to protect kauri, Aucklanders have opened their wallets to help, with ratepayers funding $107 million over 10 years through a natural environment targeted rate . The funding – which towers over the Government’s $32 million for all of Aotearoa – is being used for everything from building new kauri-safe tracks to investing in the latest research. The measures are working, according to Auckland Council’s … [Read more...] about The Last Stand: Gatekeepers v ‘self-entitled’ walkers where nearly half kauri at risk

James Williams said public health officials were tracking trends and Medway had already seen an increase. He said health workers planned daily for Covid but were also looking towards the winter season when there was more of a risk of respiratory viruses. He urged people to take sensible measures. 'Be cautious' "We're clearly planning for Covid as we do daily, but we have clearly got contingency plans should there be an increase in prevalence in cases through the winter period," he said. The public health chief said: "Our message is always to be cautious, to use sensible precautions when you're out and about, maintain the standard … [Read more...] about Medway Covid contingency plans ‘in place for winter’

By Alex Kleiderman Published 7 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Coronavirus pandemic The number of people being admitted to hospital with Covid is expected to rise further, the chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency has said. Hospital cases and infections are down on earlier highs but Dame Jenny Harries told the BBC there could still be an impact on treating other patients. Her warning comes after figures showed UK Covid cases jumped by 32% in a week. Dame Jenny said people were being encouraged to "go about their normal lives" but in a "precautionary way". In England, almost 9,000 hospital beds were taken up with Covid patients on 30 June, a doubling of admissions since the start of the month.
