Nate Davis USA TODAY Published 1:34 AM EDT Sep 8, 2019 Even the most casual NFL fans know plenty about Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, Aaron Rodgers and, at this point, perhaps more than they wanted about Antonio Brown, Ezekiel Elliott and others. If you enjoy fantasy football, many of the players are familiar, but their identities beyond the numbers might not be. And then there are just those good ol' training camp stories you might have missed. So, heading into the league's 100th season, here are 100 names (mostly less obvious) you should know, including maybe a few you'd simply lost track of ... 1. Patriots P Jake Bailey: Belichick is going with a right-footed punter — stop the presses. Not a surprise given Bailey was a fifth-round pick in April, but it speaks to his ability given how stellar predecessor Ryan Allen was in New England's Super Bowl LIII win. 2. Colts GM Chris Ballard: What does he do — if anything — after QB Andrew Luck's … [Read more...] about NFL 2019 season: 100 players, coaches, names to know this year

The new NFL season gets underway tonight as the Chicago Bears take on the Green Bay Packers. All roads lead to Miami, Florida for Super Bowl LIV in February - but plenty of twists and turns lie ahead. The New England Patriots enter the season as defending champions, with the Los Angeles Rams looking to go one better after losing out in the showpiece at the end of last season. MVP Patrick Mahomes also leads his Kansas City Chiefs into the season with high hopes, whilst plenty of teams are hovering with hopes of emerging as contenders for the championship. After a hectic off-season with some huge stories and developments, here are 10 questions yet to be answered as the new season gets underway. 1) Are the Browns genuine contenders? The Cleveland Browns have been something of a laughing stock in the NFL for a number of years. The historic franchise have been perennial underachievers, and they hit rock bottom with just one win in 30 games in the 2016 and 2017 seasons combined. But last … [Read more...] about 10 big questions entering new NFL season
Welcome to Red Letters. Football, soccer, is a truly global game. It is also a game which means so much more than 22 players on the pitch and the two managers in the dugout. For 90 minutes at a time, this is what matters most, but surrounding that is culture, identity, and relationships. To be a part of a club can often mean to be part of a family, a kinship, which only a small percentage in this world can experience. On the field, the collective and the individual combine to bring success. The same happens with supporters. It is a true collective game, where it is easy to feel as one with thousands of others; it is also individual, where the emotions you feel are your emotions, the experiences you feel are your experiences, and nobody else can understand. Over the course of the 2019/20 season, two Liverpool fans, friends, will write to each other about those emotions and experiences. Michael MacCambridge, born, raised and living in the United States, is a best-selling author and … [Read more...] about Red Letters / 16 August 2019: The sin of not savouring this team
Nate Davis USA TODAY Published 7:29 AM EDT Jul 22, 2019 Take it from me, few things are more fun (if thankless) than the prediction business. So, with training camp doors swinging open, it's time to reveal my now-annual NFL record projections. The methodology? Using the latest pre-camp info, I predict all 256 regular-season games on the 2019 schedule, letting the chips fall where they may. From there, I add bonus prognostications for all 11 postseason contests. The results? Well, I've correctly forecast a Super Bowl eight months ahead of schedule (Seahawks over Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII) ... and also had some spectacular misses, including way-off-base outlooks for Seattle and Indianapolis just a year ago (both teams reached the postseason, of course, avoiding last-place finishes I envisioned). But 2018 produced extra fun when Seahawks LBs Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright kindly (and correctly) dismissed my predictive powers. Wagner even followed up to rib me after … [Read more...] about 2019 NFL record predictions: Will Patriots return to Super Bowl?
