It all started more or less out of necessity back in 1965, on Bainbridge Island, Washington, when a couple of neighborhood dads, Bill Bell and Joel Pritchard, were looking for something – anything – to keep their bored kids entertained. They had some pieces of wood, a plastic ball, and a badminton court, so they made up a game on the spot and named it "Pickleball." David McCallum showed correspondent Luke Burbank the ball used in that inaugural game. "This is the Cosom Fun Ball," he said. "You can see, 'Safety Play' is the little label on there." McCallum offered one version of how the game came to be named Pickleball: "The Pickles version of the naming is that Pickles would run around here in these bushes and grab the ball, so they named it after Pickles the dog." Burbank said, "But there's also some speculation that Pickles was born after the game was invented, which would make it impossible." "It would!" While the origin of the sport's name might be complicated, the game … [Read more...] about Picking up pickleball

I uncovered America’s secret serial killer – he was as psychotic as Ted Bundy and kept sick snaps of victims in shoebox
NO one knew that the blue-eyed and “silver-tongued” Bruce Lindahl was a serial killer - until new DNA technology revealed his horrendous crimes. Lindahl is believed to have murdered at least nine young people during a nine-year period up until 1981 in the United States and is being investigated for many more cold cases. The true nature of this stone-hearted kidnapper, rapist and strangler only emerged when Detective Chris Loudon tried to solve the 46-year-old case of slain schoolgirl Pam Maurer, 16, from Lisle, near Chicago in Illinois. His investigation led him to a box full of naked photographs of young women taken by the twisted Lindahl. Inside were Polaroids and prints of often terrified, underage and drugged females either tricked or forced to come home with the sadistic predator. Most escaped alive, but many did not. A Radical Feminist Vision of Total Escape
On a cool spring evening, a woman prepares risotto in the spartan kitchen of a hunting lodge, eats it alone, and scoops some out for the dog. The next morning, she makes a startling discovery: At some point during the night, an invisible, impermeable barrier has appeared outside, dividing her from much of the Austrian countryside. She calls it, simply, “the wall.” When she presses her hand to it, it feels “like a windowpane.” She beats it with her fist; it holds. She walks alongside it to locate where it ends; it doesn’t. (Later, when it becomes clear that everyone on the other side of the wall has died, their corpses petrified like “stone,” she decides she’d rather remain separated from “the incomprehensible thing” that had happened to them.) She is stranded; she is completely alone. Presumably, every person she knew and loved—her two daughters, her friends—is on the other side; she will never see them again. The Wall , Marlen Haushofer’s brutal and absorbing dystopian novel, … [Read more...] about A Radical Feminist Vision of Total Escape
Prince Charles ‘excited’ to establish himself as Sandringham’s steward
Prince Charles has been reportedly taking over the royal duties at Queen Elizabeth’s Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. According to Daily Mail , the Prince of Wales has established himself as Sandringham’s steward as the 96-year-old Monarch is taking a step backwards amid mobility problems as Her Majesty prefers to spend her time at the Wood Farm. A source told the outlet, “The Prince is very respectful that it is his mother's private residence and very much the Queen's home." The insider also added that Duke is “excited about the plans.” Another source spilt the beans to the outlet: “In the recent heatwave Charles really wanted to go out for a swim to the outdoor pool sandwiched at Highgrove between some beautiful flower beds. “The Prince was about to put his trunks on but then he thought better of it because there were members of the public milling around.” … [Read more...] about Prince Charles ‘excited’ to establish himself as Sandringham’s steward
