Fernando Alonso’s return to Formula One is still on the cards despite the two-time world champion's involvement in a cycling accident in Switzerland on Thursday morning. The Spaniard, 39, is set to race for Alpine this season, and makes his return to the sport after a two year hiatus. However, his participation in pre-season testing - which takes place in Bahrain on March 12/14 - as well as the season-opening race at the same track two weeks later was potentially in doubt. It was reported that Alonso was hit by a car while cycling near his home in Lugano. However, his team have assured fans that their star driver should be fit to race as normal this season. The sportsman, 42, opened up about experiencing fatherhood again with baby son Cree , who wife Kate gave birth to seven weeks ago. Rio revealed football came first when he was at the height of his career as he was away "75 per cent of the time". Simon Cowell has said breaking his back "wasn't that bad" and that he has fully recovered following his accident last year. The reality TV judge was injured when he fell off an electric bike outside his home in Malibu , California, in August. His treatment involved six hours of surgery, which included the insertion of a metal rod into his back, and doctors reportedly said he had been lucky. After missing Britain's Got Talent last year and much of America's Got Talent, Cowell , 61, is now preparing to make his return in the US.
