Italian sprint king Elia Viviani held off Australian rival Caleb Ewan and South African Daryl Impey in a tight finish to win the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road race on Sunday. Viviani was able to stay with the lead group over four tough climbs and emerge from the slipstream of Deceuninck-Quick Step teammate Michael Morkov in the final metres to pip Ewan at the post. Lotto Soudal rider Ewan was unlucky to find himself boxed in at the start of the final sprint and while he finished fast, he ran out of road to overhaul Viviani who finished in 3hr 54min 35sec. The 163 kilometre (101 mile) race, which starts and finishes in Geelong, outside Melbourne, and takes in the world-renowned Great Ocean Road, has seen a different nationality win each year since its inception in 2015. The 44th annual Cleethorpes Athletic Club's 10k road race got off to a flying start this morning, with hundreds of runners eager to follow the fast, flat course. Many of the amateur and professional runners will have been hoping for a personal best or simply to start a new fitness regime for the New Year. As ever, crowds of family, friends and well wishers turned out to support the competitors as they took to the streets of Cleethorpes and Humberston. The official, well marshalled course comprised of two small loops and one large loop and uses chip timing. Although it's the 44th year as a New Year's Day run, it is 34 years as a 10k. Each finisher was awarded with a Technical T-shirt. The race finished on the grassed area opposite the miniature railway station on King's Road, Cleethorpes .
