Graphene used in ‘world first’ road surface trial on A1
Published 9 September 2021 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The so-called wonder material graphene is to be used in resurfacing the A1 in Northumberland in what the government says is a "world first". The trial will examine whether the material, which is only one atom thick, could prolong the lifespan of roads. Graphene has been used to enhance new asphalt when mixed with plastic but this is the first time it will be added to recycled asphalt on site. National Highways manager Graeme Watt said it could be "industry changing". "Laboratory trials have been a success and the on-site trials in Northumberland will be a world first use of graphene in road production," he said. "From what we've seen so far, it could make some of our assets last significantly longer." Graphene is extremely strong, robust and flexible and has a wide range of uses including … [Read more...] about Graphene used in ‘world first’ road surface trial on A1
$2.2B infrastructure budget paves way for new roads, bridges, bike lanes across U.S.
U.S. transportation officials announced $2.2 billion for local infrastructure projects on Thursday, paving the way for new bridges, roads, bike lanes, railways and ports in scores of communities across the country. The competitive grants are more than double the amount awarded the previous year under the same program. The influx comes from a $1 trillion infrastructure law backed by President Joe Biden, which provided an additional $7.5 billion over five years for the grants. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the projects would help modernize America's transportation systems. "This is a program that recognizes many of the most interesting and compelling ideas and designs and plans aren't going to come from Washington, but more of the funding should," Buttigieg said. "That's what we're delivering here." Buttigieg traveled to Arizona to highlight projects in Phoenix and Tucson, each of which are receiving the maximum of $25 million. In Phoenix, the money will help … [Read more...] about $2.2B infrastructure budget paves way for new roads, bridges, bike lanes across U.S.
Drivers warned not pressing button on their dashboard during heatwave could cost them a £5,000 fine
BRITAIN is currently sizzling in the hottest UK temperatures ever recorded. For drivers, this could easily mean a hefty fine if you aren't prepared out on the road. Air conditioning is a common feature on new cars these days, but there are plenty of older cars on our roads without it. With temperatures approaching 40C, even having the window down is unlikely to be much use when trying to cool down. Zuto car finance wants to remind drivers that Rule 237 of the Highway Code says you must keep your vehicle well-ventilated to avoid drowsiness. It urges drivers to remember that driving in the sweltering temperatures this week will make it a lot harder to maintain a correct state of mind while behind the wheel. Not doing so could result in an accident and a fine of up to £5,000. Suspected bank robber thwarted by tunnel collapsing on him near the Vatican
Rome — An Italian man had to be rescued after becoming trapped in a collapsed tunnel near the Vatican, suspected of being part of a gang burrowing its way to a nearby bank, police said Friday. Firefighters spent eight hours digging him out from under a road in the west of Rome, before he was finally freed on Thursday evening and taken to hospital. "Two people from Naples were arrested for resisting a public official and two, from Rome, for damage" to public property, a police spokesman told AFP. The rescued man, one of the two Romans, remains in hospital, he said without giving an update on his condition. "We are still investigating, we do not exclude that they are thieves, it is one of the theories," he said. For Italian newspapers, however, the motive was clear, noting the tunnel was found near a bank ahead of the August 15 long weekend, when residents traditionally head out of town and much of Rome becomes empty. "The hole gang," headlined the Corriere della Sera … [Read more...] about Suspected bank robber thwarted by tunnel collapsing on him near the Vatican
