Fashion advice for those experiencing symptoms of menopause – particularly hot flushes – has rarely ventured beyond wearing light, loose layers. Now, however, several brands are developing clothes with technology designed for menopausal women. An anti-flush nightdress is the bestselling item for clothing brand Become, which was launched in 2016 and has this year seen sales rise by 213%. Another brand, Cucumber Clothing, sells garments made using “volcanic mineral to help keep your body at the ideal core temperature”. Its range includes nightdresses, track pants and pyjamas. Fifty One Apparel, launched last year with the slogan “cool clothes for hot women”, says its technology “ensures heat is taken away from the body and stored and released back when the body begins to cool down”. The Fifty One Apparel owner Louise Nicholson said: “I had a textile agency and was selling fabrics to the big retailers. I was listening to a guy on the … [Read more...] about At last… the world of fashion embraces the menopause

I love fashion. I love going to catwalk shows. I love getting dressed up. I love the illicit thrill of some frippery I can’t really afford, accompanied by the rustle of tissue paper in a crisp shopping bag – a sound bested only by a champagne cork popping. And that’s not even the half of it. More than anything, I love the thrill of the high street chase. I love stopping a woman on the street to ask where her dress is from, and hunting it down and ordering it from my phone at the bus stop. I have been known to go weak at the knees over new suede boots and I will never, ever have enough earrings. But you know what else I love? Living in a climate that doesn’t fry me alive. Oceans with fish and icebergs in them rather than plastic. Mars is a long way – and besides, Elon Musk? No thanks. Which means I need to love clothes in a way that doesn’t create huge amounts of waste and use a disproportionate amount of the world’s carbon budget. It is obscene … [Read more...] about The fashion editor’s eco-makeover: can I rethink my love affair with clothes?
Rap beefs are nothing new, but the past few years have seen hip-hop stars apparently align on a new common enemy: their own stylists. In verse after verse, rappers are claiming that they no longer make use of professional clothes-pickers, implying that they are more than capable of going to the shops without special assistance. The most notable entry in the anti-stylist movement is French Montana and Drake’s No Stylist, in which the pair claim that they have such sartorial wherewithal that they can wear “new Chanel, Saint Laurent, Gucci bag” without any need from outside advisers. The song, released in September last year, went platinum on the Billboard charts and has been streamed almost 150m times on YouTube. They are far from the only ones, though: 21 Savage (“I ain’t even fuckin’ round with no stylist, I got too much drip”), Tyler, the Creator (“These fucking rappers got stylists, it’s cause they can’t think for … [Read more...] about Fashion killa: why are rappers at war with their stylists?

When it comes to wardrobe classics, it doesn’t get much more iconic than a trench coat. As a true fashion geek, I revel in its patriotic backstory and its nerdishly functional details — hello storm flaps to keep out driving rain. Thanks to Burberry designer Riccardo Tisci, who joined the British brand last spring, the trench has had a fashion renaissance, with celebrities including Rihanna and Madonna wearing his updated versions. And now, the trench has gone rainbow-coloured. Designs in Crayola hues were all over the runways last month, from lipstick red at Coach in New York and blush pink at Moschino in Milan, to a chic powder-blue style at Junya Watanabe in Paris. Jess Wood shared advice for embracing this season's brightly coloured trench coats trend, pictured: Coat, £69, Topshop; jumper, £76, John Lewis; trousers, £130, Jigsaw; shoes, £245, Russell & Bromley Coat, £39.99, H&M; jumper, £150, Jigsaw; skirt, £39.50, M&S; … [Read more...] about Technicolour trench coats!
