Sexual violence against women and girls should be treated as a national emergency until it’s been defeated, writes RISHI SUNAK

July 27, 2022 by www.dailymail.co.uk

How serious are we as a society about protecting women and girls? There is a strong cultural consensus, backed up by legislation, that deplores and forbids any form of sexual violence. And yet women and girls continue to be subject to attack. Every case is an outrage that seriously undermines the sense of security to which every female is entitled. As a man, I wouldn't think twice about walking to the shops at night yet my wife and daughters would hesitate – because of the threat posed by other men. That's something I am determined to change. As Chancellor, I made it one of my priorities to boost support for victims. By 2024/25, we will invest £192million a year into victim support, including 1,000 independent sexual violence advisers and 24/7 support for rape victims. I also funded Operation Soteria, a ground-breaking new approach to policing, making police investigations less intrusive for victims and putting them at the forefront so that more perpetrators face justice. … [Read more...] about Sexual violence against women and girls should be treated as a national emergency until it’s been defeated, writes RISHI SUNAK

Rishi Sunak is the only candidate who understands Thatcherite economics

August 3, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Half a century ago, one of my Conservative predecessors as chancellor, Anthony Barber, delivered a notably popular Budget. In that year, 1972, he set an ambitious GDP growth target and unveiled bold fiscal loosening to deliver it. To those who warned this might be inflationary, he replied with a message of reassurance: on the contrary, demand would spark investment and, in turn, supply-side expansion, and bring an abundance of goods and services for sale. The overall effect would push prices down, not up. He said the doubters – “gloomsters” some would call them today – were wrong. In the years of inflationary nightmare that followed, I often reflected on his mistaken belief that politicians can fine-tune both inflation and demand using tax cuts and other fiscal policy tools. As chancellor, I vowed never to repeat that mistake. Nothing erodes the standard of living like unbridled inflation. In the 1970s we saw the impact of rising prices, crippling the economy and putting millions out … [Read more...] about Rishi Sunak is the only candidate who understands Thatcherite economics

August 3, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk

PEOPLE who hate Britain would be dubbed extremist terrorists under a Rishi Sunak government, he says. The Tory wannabe-PM today vowed a crackdown on Islamic extremism . And he promised to shake up the anti-terror Prevent programme to tackle the UK’s biggest threats. It came as a new poll showed opponent Liz Truss storming even further ahead with a 34-point lead. YouGov research for The Times and Times Radio showed 60 per cent of Tory members backing her to be the next PM, with ex-Chancellor Mr Sunak on 26 per cent. Islamic extremism makes up just 22 per cent of Prevent referrals, despite being an element in eight out of ten live counter-terror investigations, his campaign says. August 5, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Rishi Sunak has insisted he will not drop out of the Tory leadership race , despite opinion polls showing that Liz Truss has double his support among party members. Asked during a Sky News debate on Thursday night whether he would quit the race, the former chancellor said: "The quick answer is no". He stressed that he would continue "fighting". Two opinion polls this week have put Mr Sunak 32 percentage points and 34 percentage points behind Ms Truss, the Foreign Secretary. Ms Truss and Mr Sunak clashed about the likelihood of recession and the best way to tackle the forecasted downturn and soaring inflation during the special programme. Liz Truss’s cost of living plans ‘clear as mud’, claims Rishi Sunak’s team

August 10, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Liz Truss has been accused by Rishi Sunak’s campaign of performing a U-turn on her cost of living support plans after she refused to rule out bringing forward more targeted support for struggling families. The Foreign Secretary’s team has been forced on the defensive after she suggested last week that there would be no “handouts” if she won the leadership contest and that her priority would be to reduce the tax burden. But on Wednesday, she failed to rule out unveiling extra support if she wins the race for Number 10. She insisted tax cuts would be her main focus, but said she would “do all I can” to ensure the nation gets through the winter. Her comments will be viewed as a hint that she would agree to extra financial assistance for households if the situation with rising energy bills demanded it. Mr Sunak’s team later accused Ms Truss of performing a U-turn, claiming her position was “as clear as mud”. The former chancellor has already made a commitment to … [Read more...] about Liz Truss’s cost of living plans ‘clear as mud’, claims Rishi Sunak’s team

Rishi Sunak: We must sanction Iran over Salman Rushdie stabbing

August 13, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Britain should designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organisation following the brutal attack on Sir Salman Rushdie, Rishi Sunak has said, as he warned that the stabbing should be a “wake up call for the West” . The former chancellor said Iran’s response to the stabbing bolstered the case for proscribing Tehran’s elite military unit, which acts as a protection force to the regime. He also suggested that the nuclear deal that lifted sanctions against Iran could have reached “a dead end”. Mr Sunak’s intervention came after Iranian politicians and media celebrated the attack on the 75-year-old writer in the United States. The suspect, Hadi Matar, of Fairview, New Jersey, was on Saturday charged with attempted murder and assault and remanded without bail. Mr Matar entered a plea of not guilty in a New York court on Saturday. He appeared in court wearing a black and white jumpsuit and a white face mask, while his hands were cuffed in front of him.
