More than 100 schools in the North East have been targeted by a malicious email which is threatening attacks, police have said. An email has been sent to hundreds of schools across the country warning that they will be attacked later today. Northumbria Police has said it is being treated as a hoax. A spokesperson said: “We are aware of malicious communications that have been sent to a number of schools in our region and this is being treated as a hoax. “There have been a number of reports of the same email being sent to schools across the country. "Police take hoaxes extremely seriously. They divert police resources and cause disruption and alarm to the public. “Our officers have been liaising with affected schools in the region to offer reassurance and highly visible patrols will continue as normal throughout the day." A teenager has been arrested in connection with allegedly-threatening emails that were sent to more than 100 schools in the North East. Wednesday’s threats warned that schools would be attacked, but police said they were treating the emails as a malicious hoax. An 18-year-old man was arrested by Hertfordshire Police and the National Crime Agency in Abbots Langley on Wednesday night on suspicion of making malicious communications. Parents across Burton and South Derbyshire are being reassured after emails were sent to several schools threatening to 'run down and shoot' children. Staffordshire Police has confirmed schools in the county had received "malicious emails", but officers have said they do not think there is a threat to local communities. The emails have been sent to schools up and down the country, and some schools have even been placed on lock-down while the emails were investigated. They have been received from an unknown source.
