What I Wish I’d Known About Sexual Assault in the Military
“D uck and cover!” a mechanized voice screamed. The ground shook and the window rattled. I rolled from my bed to the floor of my trailer and felt for the armor I’d forgotten in my office. I lay there and sweated and swore. The voice from the loudspeaker urged me to get away from the windows. I was inside a tin can. I crawled to the door. Another series of explosions, and I hit the rocks. I was lying there, panting, when I saw a bright-yellow bunker tucked behind a row of sandbags and palm trees. I was up, running, full out. My robe fell open and flew out behind me. Another hit. I was 20 feet away. Ten. Five. I crashed into the … [Read more...] about What I Wish I’d Known About Sexual Assault in the Military
Amelie Mauresmo under fire as she claims women’s tennis has less ‘appeal’ than men’s
Amelie Mauresmo - the newly appointed French Open tournament director - has come under fire for claiming that women’s tennis has less ‘appeal’ than the men’s game. The tennis world has been out in Paris this week for the second Grand Slam event of the year at Roland Garros. The event’s new tournament director Mauresmo has endured a difficult start to her reign though, following a car-crash press conference in Paris on Wednesday. The tournament has come under heavy scrutiny following the late finishes of matches, after the clash between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal left broadcasters angered, and fans stranded without late night transport. As well as addressing the late conclusion issue, Mauresmo was also quizzed on why only one of 10 night session matches were played by the women’s side of the tournament. She controversially responded: “In this era that we are in, I don't feel bad or unfair saying that right now you have more attraction, more attractivity [in] general, … [Read more...] about Amelie Mauresmo under fire as she claims women’s tennis has less ‘appeal’ than men’s

Dominant England outclassed Belgium – but one thing let them down
There are far tougher challenges ahead and enough familiar concerns to prevent anyone getting over excited about this dominant victory over Belgium , but England’s summer is up and running and there was lots to like about this performance. Belgium are not in the elite tier of international sides, but they were good enough to qualify for the European Championship and were so comprehensively outplayed that there was an obvious gulf in class. Manager Sarina Wiegman will get a more insightful appraisal of how strong England’s chances of winning the Euros are when they take on reigning champions the Netherlands next week, but this was an excellent start. This time, Belgium managed a single shot on target and only created a couple of dangerous moments, the worst of them when England captain’s Leah Williamson … [Read more...] about Dominant England outclassed Belgium – but one thing let them down

‘The party’s over’: Piers Morgan and Gary Lineker lead celebrity reactions as Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid resign
Piers Morgan has led celebrity reactions after Rishi Sunak resigned as chancellor and Sajid Javid quit as health secretary. On Tuesday, Mr Sunak said ‘the public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously’, adding ‘I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning.’ In an incendiary letter, Mr Javid said the British people ‘expect integrity from their government’ but voters now believed Mr Johnson’s administration was neither competent nor “acting in the national interest.’ The resignations came as Mr Johnson was forced into a humiliating apology over his handling of the Chris Pincher row after it emerged he had forgotten about being told of previous allegations of ‘inappropriate’ conduct. Mr Pincher quit as deputy chief whip last week following claims that he groped two men at a private members’ club, but Mr Johnson was told about allegations against him as far back as 2019.
