Experts discuss how a Banana a day can keep cancer away
Bananas may offer more than just a good source of fiber, Vitamin C, potassium and other vitamins and minerals . A new study by researchers at the University of Leeds and Newcastle University in the U.K., published on July 26 in the peer-reviewed journal Cancer Prevention Research , suggests that a starch found in green bananas ( as opposed to ripe ones ) and some other foods may potentially help reduce the risk of some cancers . A 20-year trial conducted among 900 patients with Lynch Syndrome (LS), the most common cause of hereditary colorectal (colon) cancer , found that a daily dose of 30 grams of resistant starch for up to four years produced a " protective effect against non–colorectal cancer LS cancers." However, more research is needed to know whether resistant starch can offer the same benefits among the general population, experts told Newsweek. Patients with LS are more likely to get colon cancer and other cancers, and at a younger age (before 50) … [Read more...] about Experts discuss how a Banana a day can keep cancer away

I spent the weekend at ‘Poshstock’ with 10,000 Sloanes in glitter and top hats
Look, I’m not really a festival person. I’ve hated tents ever since my Duke of Edinburgh Award when I got lost in the Chilterns. I hate the sticky sensation of being unclean. Not a big fan of crowds. Don’t like warm beer. So I’ve avoided Wilderness – a decidedly upmarket festival in Oxfordshire – for several years because it looked, well, terrifically silly. A whole load of posh people drinking, dancing and shouting their heads off while wearing pheasant feathers in their hats? Not for me. I get enough of that at my family Christmas. But when a friend suggested we go this year because we could stay in her sister’s house, ten minutes from the Oxfordshire estate on which Wilderness is held, I thought “why not?” A taxi in and out every day. No camping. The possibility of a bath at the end of the night. Surely even I could handle that? The festival’s been running since 2011 and is nicknamed “Poshstock” for the crowd it attracts: mostly 20- and 30-somethings who look like they could … [Read more...] about I spent the weekend at ‘Poshstock’ with 10,000 Sloanes in glitter and top hats

Energy bills could hit £5,000 next year, experts warn
HOUSEHOLDS have been warned energy bills could top £5,000 next year, according to experts. Regulator Ofgem could be forced to set the energy price cap at £5,038 for the average household from next April, experts say. It is more than £2,500 higher than previous forecasts, which were already grim, and heaps extra pressure on households across Britain. Auxilione, an energy consultancy, also predicted that bills would reach £4,467 in January - higher than current estimates. It increased its estimate from last week that energy bills could reach £4,400. Earlier this week, analysts at Cornwall Insight predicted the price cap will hit £4,200 in January . As it stands, the nightmare scenario would mean that an average household will spend £571 on energy in the month of January alone. Afghan families start U.S. resettlement process at repurposed conference center after traumatic ordeals
Leesburg, Virginia — At the makeshift clothing store, outfitted with a mix of traditional Afghan garments and American clothes including jackets, socks and underwear, a young Afghan boy flashed a bright smile as he selected his first pair of outdoor boots. Inside the recreation room, children played table hockey, took turns hurling a soccer ball in the air and contested boisterous foosball matches while Afghan music played in the background. A young Afghan boy ran around with a soccer ball, showcasing his skills to a news cameraman who followed him across the room. At the large dining area, which can seat 800 individuals, Afghan adults and families with minor children enjoyed Afghan cuisine staples, such as a kidney bean stew known as lubya, and Naan, as well as halal versions of American classics, including turkey hot dogs with beef chili. In an arts-and-craft room adorned by dozens of paintings and drawings, children sat side-by-side drawing. Some had drawn animals, their … [Read more...] about Afghan families start U.S. resettlement process at repurposed conference center after traumatic ordeals
