A small convoy of flashbacks trundle us back to Travers's unhappy childhood in the Australian outback, where her father is played by Colin Farrell with a light beading of sweat across his forehead, though its hard to say whether he perspires because the character is an alcoholic, about to be fired from his job at the bank, or because he's required to show up on a white horse and regale her with stories of myth and magic, wreathed in the mists of the Celtic twilight. A proud Irishman, Farrell must have been biting his fist between takes to get some of this stuff out of his mouth, and looks frankly relieved when he starts coughing blood onto his handkerchief.
